Soccer Star Bites Opponent, Gets Twitter Follow From Mike Tyson

TysongettySam Laird2013-04-23 02:56:15 UTC

Only on Twitter, folks. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.

Luis Suarez, our antagonistic protagonist here, is something of a bad boy in the soccer world — that is, not necessarily known for his sportsmanship or sense of fair play. Suarez's latest misstep? Biting an opponent during his Liverpool squad's 2-2 draw with Chelsea over the weekend.

The bite, of course, drew all sorts of criticism and outrage. But it also gained Suarez a very famous new Twitter follower: ex-boxer Mike Tyson, a notorious biter in his own right.

Tyson famously took a chunk out of Evander Holyfield's ear during a 1997 fight (then last year tweeted a reference to the carnage while pimping Holyfield's barbecue sauce).

Media reports over the weekend said Tyson's follow came just minutes after Suarez's chomp. We haven't been able to confirm that, but the uncertainty does raise a juicy conspiracy theory: What if Tyson in fact followed Suarez just before the bite and recruited him into his carnivorous cabal? Now that'd be a meaty sports story, indeed.

ThingLink's Interactive Images Come to Facebook

Thinglink-images-facebookSam Laird2013-04-23 12:42:28 UTC

Marketers just got a powerful new way to reach fans on Facebook: interactive images powered by ThingLink.

The popular interactive-image platform officially hit Facebook on Tuesday morning. That means posts there now let fans interact with content embedded "inside" an image — other photos, video or text blocks, for example — without leaving Facebook Timeline.

ThingLink allows users — ranging from big national brands to someone like you or I — to enhance images with links to other selected pieces of content. When you hover over a main image, icons pop up to indicate the presence of additional content. Then, with a click, users can open YouTube videos, audio clips, other websites and virtually anything else that would previously have had to be linked to elsewhere. Check out this Facebook post from Doctors Without Borders for a hands-on example.

In theory, the entire package offers a great opportunity for brands, which aim to get as much information as possible in front of fans, but often have very little time to make an impression.

ThingLink isn't the first interactive-image service to hit Facebook — Stipple did so in January — but its presence does point to a growing trend. Interactive images essentially give brands (or anyone else) a standalone communication platform within the larger Facebook platform.

Back in November, ThingLink made its debut on Twitter. Since then, the platform's reps say brands have "commonly seen" more than five times as much engagement on Twitter posts using ThingLink images. So if the results are any indication, it's set to become a useful tool on Facebook now, as well.

Do interactive images such as ThingLink's have a future online? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Lettrs App Lets You Send Snail Mail From Your iPhone

Envelope-wax-sealMatt Petronzio2013-04-23 09:00:27 -0400

In an age dominated by social media, the quality of our long-distance interactions is diminishing. There's only so much you can say in a 140-character tweet, it's tough to express yourself in a Facebook message and emails seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

But tech startup lettrs is trying to change all of that. After providing an inventive cloud-based platform to send both paper and digital letters around the world since last year, lettrs launched its first mobile app for the iPhone on Tuesday, with Android and iPad versions already in development.

The app extends the function of the lettrs platform by converting mobile voice, data and pictures to digital and paper post letters. With the goal of increasing meaningful communications from the palm of your hand, the app allows you to dictate, modify and deliver a letter through either the cloud or via lettrs' real-life postal operations in Collinsville, Conn.

Drew Bartkiewicz, founder of lettrs, will introduce the app at the PostalVision 2020/3.0 conference in Washington, D.C., where he's leading a panel discussion on the future of written communications.

Bartkiewicz describes the lettrs platform as a personal writing desk, designed for slowing down and catching up on all of the letters we stopped writing at the advent of the digital age.

"Technology is what we make of it, and no app has yet been designed to dust off the previous — though timeless — aspirations of letter writing," Bartkiewicz tells Mashable. "I hope people will choose to take time to create a 'lettr' when more purposeful words are desired, but with the efficiencies of mobile and social firmly intact."

According to lettrs, an estimated 40 billion letters are stored in boxes, drawers and basements across the United States. The new mobile app furthers lettrs' commitment to help people preserve those beloved letters from family and friends, and to highlight the happiness in sending and receiving snail mail.

"Implicit with the phrase 'I sent you a letter' is the notion that someone took time to choose more deliberate words, more completed thoughts," Bartkiewicz says. "And the words of a letter delightfully exist without a 'reply' button hanging over them.

"This makes people happy, and this is why we make receiving a letter as quiet an experience as creating one."

"This makes people happy, and this is why we make receiving a letter as quiet an experience as creating one."

Users can customize the experience by choosing from more than 20 fonts and themes, uploading a letter with the iPhone's camera and preserving letters in their Shoeboxes (private) or on the Fridge (public).

Lettrs also offers a school program, called Literacy Through Letters, to teach today's generations about the aspirations and affirmations of good letter writing.

"Because lettrs exists within their world — digital, social and mobile — we believe we can improve the way students communicate with each other and us 'older people' in perhaps more valuable ways," Bartkiewicz says. "We hope lettrs becomes a place that students choose when they have something more complete, purposeful and lasting to say."

The app is available on the App Store for $2.99. There's even a deal up front: If you enter the code "mother" between now and Mother's Day (May 12), you can send a free letter on fine linen or parchment paper, scented and enclosed within a handcrafted card that's sealed with a wax stamp. Digital letters delivered via the cloud will also be free.

"We hope to bring the social grace of letter writing squarely into social media, to offer a tasteful correspondence option and eventually a personal post office in the cloud," Bartkiewicz says.

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Director Tweets First Photo of Storm

Brian Anthony Hernandez2013-04-23 01:28:58 UTC

X-Men: Days of Future Past, the seventh installment in the X-Men film franchise, doesn't arrive in theaters until 2014. But fans are already getting an early glimpse of the movie on social media, particularly from director Bryan Singer on Twitter.

Singer gave his followers a treat Monday, tweeting "Storm watch" along with the first public image of actress Halle Berry as the weather-manipulating Marvel character Storm during filming for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Berry also played Storm in the first three X-Men films.

The 46-year-old Academy Award-winning actress, who is pregnant with her second child, recently revealed that the pregnancy will influence her role as Storm because she "won't be able to do any fighting or flying or things like that." She assured fans, though, that Storm will remain a pivotal character in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The 20th Century Fox film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 18, 2014.

In March, the studio released a six-second Vine teaser of The Wolverine, the forthcoming sixth chapter in the X-Men film franchise, before unveiling the movie's first full trailer.

Berry is among the actors reportedly reprising roles from previous X-Men flicks, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Daniel Cudmore. New cast members are Peter Dinklage, Fan Bingbing, Booboo Stewart and Omar Sy.

Dove's Viral Video Sparks Discussion, and Other Top Comments

ThumbnaildoveJessica Fee2013-04-20 17:39:47 UTC

What do Dove soap, Korean pop star Psy, and BASE jumping all have in common?

They all scored viral video hits this week and were the subject of some of our most-discussed stories.

In this week's Top Comments, readers debate the motives behind the viral video ad that Dove released on YouTube this past Monday.

In the video, a former forensic artist for the San Jose, California police department sketches two portraits of women without knowing what they look like. The first sketch he creates based on how the women describe their own features.

The second, based on someone else's description. The results are extremely powerful, and the video spread like wildfire across Facebook, Twitter, and StumbleUpon.

While many were touched by the video's message, many people also decried Dove's parent company, Unilever, of being hypocritical in its marketing strategies.

Psy released his highly-anticipated new single, "Gentleman" this week. Within three days, the video already had 100 million views, tying the record set by a video of the Russian meteor from February. We asked our readers: is the video better than Psy's original hit, "Gangnam Style"? The overwhelming majority of our commenters said no, it wasn't. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

This video of a BASE jumper in a wingsuit zipping through a narrow cave opening was also the topic of much discussion this week. While many comments expressed amazement and admiration for the guts it took to take the leap, others prematurely nominated the jumper for a Darwin Award.

A recent study by Syncapse found that a "like" on a Facebook brand page is worth $174. Many of our readers denounced the study, citing flawed methodology as one of the reasons they simply didn't agree with the findings. What do you think? Let us know and you could see your response featured in next week's top comments.

Facebook Cracks Down on Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Fan Pages

for The Daily Dot 2013-04-20 17:25:59 UTC

Suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev might have a social media presence on Russian site Vkontakte and on Twitter, but finding him on Facebook is harder than you might think.

It's become a trend that pages in support of criminals show up on Facebook within days. That was the case with Christopher Dorner, the former Los Angeles police officer who went on a killing spree in February 2013, and with Aurora, Colo. shooter James Holmes.

You can add Tsarnaev to that list, though it appears that Facebook is making it difficult for its users to look him up.

A Facebook search of the suspect's name did not yield any profiles, pages, or groups. By entering Facebook URLs that included the name "Dzhokhar Tsarnaev," we found a fan page with 43 likes that actively mocks the authorities for their inability to catch him, as evidenced by the banner image seen below.

The fake page, written in the voice of the suspect, also states the motives behind the explosions.

The Daily Dot contacted Facebook to see whether its was actively making Tsarnaev unsearchable on the social network, but representatives didn't provide a concrete answer. A spokesperson for the company did confirm that several fake accounts and pages glorifying Tsarnaev had been removed.

When we pointed out that the Facebook search didn't produce any results, a spokesperson noted that it "can take time to populate in Search if they're new."

"Search does not function like a crawler. It only shows pages most relevant to you, which may explain why it's not showing up," he also noted.

But fan pages for Dorner and Holmes began showing up in Facebook searches in the hours after their names were released, suggesting that the social network has taken steps to hide pages and fake profiles in Tsarnaev's case.

How to Nail The Social Job Interview

Job seekers, listen up! Your interview doesn't begin when an employer calls you. It doesn't begin when you walk into an office. And it certainly doesn't begin after you've done all the talking.

It likely begins before you even know it, through a simple online search to check out your presence. Essentially, you’re being “interviewed” online through your social networks — before the background check, before the phone call and before you have any sort of conversation with a potential employer.

So, how can you nail this new sort of social job interview? Let’s explore.

According to recent studies, 92% of employers are using or planning to use social networking for recruiting. So, with the majority of employers likely conducting a social job interview, it’s a good idea to understand what they are looking for. Some employers want to be sure you are a creative thinker, have initiative and can multitask. Others may expect you to have a bounty of experience listed on your social networks. It just depends on the organization.

Do your research and find out what the employer is looking for. For example, if the job description says you to need at least three years of work experience, make it clear that you match these requirements. This can be done by either listing out your work history or creating a bio that indicates what you’ve done in the past. This helps the employer identify why you’re worthy of a real interview because your experience is clearly listed.

While having the right sort of content on your social networks is important, the way you present yourself online is equally important. For instance, if you just post content online without any sort of formal opinion on the subject, the employer may never know your stances on industry issues. Nor will they see your critical thinking skills or expertise in the field. Similarly, if you never update your LinkedIn page or Twitter stream, a potential manager won’t be able to tell what sort of candidate you are, freeing up room for your competition.

Put some personality into your social networks, particularly if the company has a heavy emphasis on company culture. For example, if the organization is known to hire self-starters with a penchant for creativity, make sure you present yourself in this light (if applicable, of course). Any of your social networks could easily showcase these traits. Just be sure this content is consistent so the employer notices during pre-screening.

Posting relevant content and being active is a necessity for your social job interview. But what are some things that are deal breakers? Your old college photos or controversial posts may not fly with some employers, but there are other factors you should think about. For instance, any time you badmouth a previous employer or co-worker, it may reflect poorly on you, not necessarily the situation. In addition, leaning towards one side of an issue when a potential employer is clearly on the other team can also harm your chances.

While you should always be authentic with your online content and with what you post, you should also think about how others will interpret it. If you’ve applied to a position, think about presenting information in a way that will be attractive to the employer.

For example, if there is positive shift in your industry towards a new practice, why not blog about the topic? This not only shows that you’re aware of what’s going on, but that you also have an opinion. Any employer who sees this will understand why you’re an expert in the space, as well as what this expertise can bring to them.

The social job interview may not be something you think about, but it is something you should consider when applying. Understand what the employer is looking for, present yourself online to show your match and clean up your online presence so you’re seen in the right light. When you do so, the social job interview will just be a positive stepping stone to landing the job.
