Vivo's Y19t is a phone built for China and aimed at ladies, has frontmounted flash for welllit selfles

Vivo may not be a well-known smartphone brand here in the states, but the firm's been pushing out audio-centric phones in China for more than a minute. Its latest handset, the Y19t, is aimed at the female market (hence the hot pink exterior) and is a more imaging-conscious unit -- it's got a 5-megapixel camera and flash on its front complementing an 8-megapixel shooter round back. The phone's also equipped with a 4.5-inch, 960 x 540 IPS display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage and dual SIM slots (one for micro and one for nano SIMs).

Like its cousin, the X1, the Y19t has a MediaTek SoC and a non-removeable 2,000 mAh battery, but unlike its predecessor, this new phone has an MT6589 1.2Ghz quad-core chip inside its 7.4mm thick chassis. Naturally, it has Chinese-friendly TD-SCDMA and GSM radios and comes running Android 4.2.1 skinned with a Vivo UI. Like what you've seen (and heard) so far? Head on down to the source to see some screenshots, more device pics and a review of the Y19t's capabilities, but you might want to bring a translator with you -- it's written in Chinese.

Eyebrows in the way? Singe them off with Adafruit's DIY flame organ, debuting just in time for the holiday weekend. If fireworks aren't enough to put the sizzle in your Independence Day party, all you need to light up your very own MIDI instrument are a few relays, solenoid valves, a digital music workstation (Adafruit recommends Livid Instruments' BASE paired with Ableton Live and Pure Data) and a blatant disregard for your own mortality. The official tutorial is still in the works, but you can watch the flame organ blaze with a patriotic tune after the break. If you're brave -- or foolish -- enough to attempt to build one of your own, just promise us that you won't drink and DIY.

Outfit of the Week: Bedouin Blue

An ikat blue print sun dress is for the globetrotter at heart; it begs for the polish of calf skin lace-up heels. Meanwhile, the Bedouin tribal tinkle of these silvery cymbal earrings adds an element of mystery. Wear it with a navy blazer, belted of course, and paired with a structured white clutch for a date night look that's both offbeat and worldly.

Pleated jacket, $129 at Zara; Maison Boinet wide cinch belt, $89 at Barneys New York; Mini lampshade tassel earrings, $10 at ASOS; Cordelia dress, $168 at Anthropologie; Leather ankle boot style shoe, $90 at Zara; Proenza Schouler large lunchbag clutch, $915 at Proenza Schouler.

LG Blu-ray player

Free LG Blu-ray player with purchase of LG Cinema 3D HDTV

Price: $759.58-$1,999.99
Buy: Amazon

This deal throws in a free mid-range $116 LG Blu-ray player when you buy a 3D HDTV buy of the same brand. Eligible TVs range from a $759.58 47-inch model to a $1,999 60-inch set. While gdgt hasn't seen any professional evaluations of the TVs, they have garnered 4-star-and-up Amazon reviews. The free Blu-ray player naturally handles 3D, as well as 2D discs, and wirelessly sends audio to your smartphone so you can listen to your cinematic explosions without bugging others.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 7-inch, 8GB Tablet

Price: $99.99 (Next best price: $119)
Buy: Office Depot

You could toss a pair of earbuds in any electronics store and hit a tablet with more impressive specs, but at a price this low the value in the little tab is tough to question. While it won't bowl you over with raw power, the Android 4.0 OS and 720p video will do the job just fine, especially at 7 inches. Think of the A2107 as a cheap decoy to load up with a bunch of different Angry Birds titles and toss to your kids to keep their grubby hands off your iPad.

Wii U Gaming Essentials Kit

PowerA Wii U Gaming Essentials Kit

Price: $5.99 (MSPR, $34.99)
Buy: Best Buy

Amid the hoopla over the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it's easy to overlook Nintendo's latest console, which earned a solid 81 gdgt score and continues to chug along in the battle to win gamers' hearts and minds. The Wii U Gaming Essentials Kit gives you some essential gear to make the Mario magnet feel at home in your living room, coming with a pair of replacement styluses for the tablet-like GamePad, screen cleaner, a case that doubles as a stand and a GamePad skin. The set comes at a steep discount from the $34.99 MSRP, as well as the $27 price we've seen at most other sites.

Samsung Galaxy S4

$50 Best Buy gift card with Samsung Galaxy phone purchase

Price: $0-$399.99 with two-year contract
Buy: Best Buy

Best Buy wants to put a Samsung Galaxy phone in your pocket or belt-holster so badly that it's willing to bribe you with a Ulysses S. Grant in gift card form. Included in the offer are a number of devices that earned stellar gdgt scores, including the current flagship, the $199.99 S4 and the year-old but still very much kicking $49.99 S3, both which earned 92 gdgt scores. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint are among carriers supported. Intriguingly, the lower-emd Samsung Stratosphere Galaxy II, which is free on contract, also qualifies for the gift card offer.

The Godfather Blu-ray

The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration Blu-ray

Price: $24.99 (MSRP $57.99)
Buy: Amazon

While you have to deal with a stinker of a third wheel known as The Godfather Part III in this set, Francis Ford Coppola's two undisputed masterpieces are well worth the $25 discounted asking price. You get the three mobster dramas in shimmering HD in the form of restored transfers, a slew of background featurettes, commentaries and background docs. If you're looking for the set in DVD form you can snag it for $24.57.

Google Glass update widens voice commands, adds web viewing

Google has delivered a steady stream of Glass updates since the Explorer Edition launched, but its new July upgrade may be the biggest yet -- it addresses several of our earliest gripes. Wearers can now answer phone calls or have messages read aloud. It's also now possible to call or message any Gmail contact, not just the top ten. Oh, and that hidden web browser? It's now public: Glass owners can ask to see a favorite page and navigate using the touchpad. If you're one of the precious few to sport Google's eyewear, you should automatically receive the much-improved firmware in the next few days; we've already heard of at least one user getting the upgrade today.

Update: We now have screenshots of how browsing works in the update -- check them out below. Google Glass July 2013 update See all photos 7 Photos

To Discuss: Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior Skirt-Pants

Today, two of Dior's biggest celebrity guests, Leelee Sobieski and Jennifer Lawrence, arrived at the label's couture show in asymmetrical-legged half-skirts, half-pants. On the left side, they resemble practical tapered trousers, but on the right they had all the swishy drama of a big ball gown. Both are from Raf Simons's latest resort collection.

So, it's official — asymmetrical-legged pants are really happening now. Like all of the best trends, this one had an inauspicious beginning: Miley Cyrus debuted a pair of half-jeans, half-sweatpants at a red-carpet event for MySpace, of all things. Her "jweats," as they have been named, were made by British designer Ashish Gupta, who also made this mesmerizing sequined jumpsuit.

But back to Dior: Jennifer Lawrence got the splashier of the two skirt-pants, which she wore with a colorful crop-top and her new blonde haircut. Her left pant leg had a patterned stripe at the seam, which matched a similar design in her shirt. She looked like a rainbow with a belly button at the end instead of a pot of gold.

The side-stripe provided more fun photo ops when she was sitting down with her legs crossed.

Meanwhile, Leelee Sobieski's pant-skirt-jumpsuit was more somber, consisting of tailored navy wool with short sleeves and nice pockets — always a plus for awkward red-carpet situations where you've no idea what to do with your hands.

As her outfit was quite spare, aside from its unusual silhouette, she wore fun Dior shoes with little patterns on the toes. She also demonstrated another advantage of flowy skirt-pants: the ability to do a matador-type swirl with one's right leg.

Will one-legged skirts be the one-shoulder dresses of 2013? There are several advantages to this trend that we can think of. Like only shaving one leg or only pedicuring one foot (if the skirt-y side is long, that is). Hopefully this is just the beginning.
