Kate Moss to design mobile accessory range: 'My phone's as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes'

Carphone Warehouse announces partnership with Kate Moss

EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION WILL PIONEER CONVERGENCE OF FASHION AND TECHNOLOGY

London, 1st July 2013 - Carphone Warehouse today announced an exclusive partnership with Kate Moss to create a range of fashion accessories for smartphones and tablets. The UK's largest mobile retailer has teamed up with the UK's most popular style icon to spearhead a new category for women, dubbed "fashion tech."

The Kate Moss Accessories Collection will launch this summer, and feature a full range of accessories that apply Kate's style sensibility to the latest handsets. The first season of the accessory line has been developed by Kate and the design team at Carphone Warehouse in recent months. Geared towards the fashion-conscious smartphone user, the collection will be available online at CarphoneWarehouse.com and all stores nationwide.

The announcement comes as figures show that more than 14 million mobile accessories were sold in the UK last year, with sales topping more than £210 million [1]. Further insights from Carphone Warehouse indicate that women are now adopting smartphones at a faster rate than men. In the last 12 months, female smartphone ownership has surged by 52% in the UK, compared to a 37% increase among men[2]. Almost two thirds of women (64%) now own a smartphone, compared to 70% of men.

Kate Moss comments, "My phone's as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes, and yet there's so little choice out there. My whole approach was to treat this as any other fashion collaboration; I was heavily involved in the design process and loved seeing my vision come to life in the final product. From the quality of materials to design, I wanted the best for my range that reflected my personal style."

Parrot Zik by Starck review: Is $400 worth it for the fanciest, techiest headphones around?

It's rare that How Would You Change takes a look at headphones, but we think this pair deserves the scrutiny. Parrot Zik by Starck is a $400 pair of Bluetooth cans with NFC, capacitive touch panels, active noise cancellation, head detection and a jawbone sensor for speech. Two of our reviewers put the headset through its paces and found that, sadly, a short battery life, wonky Bluetooth performance and so-so sound quality meant the set wasn't worth the $400 asking price. Apple files application to register 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

Evidence is mounting that Apple might out a smartwatch in the near future after Yahoo Japan noticed that the company applied for the "iWatch" trademark in Japan on June 3rd. Our Japanese editor noticed that several other companies have applied for that term as well, though this one (released on June 27th) is from Apple Inc. of Cupertino. That follows a patent application from Apple we saw earlier in the year for a watch-like AMOLED device that proposed a slap bracelet, kinetic energy charger and "end-detection" user sensor, among other features. In addition, other rumors from Bloomberg back in February suggested that 100 Apple employees were working on a smartwatch of some kind. If we don't see a device after all that, Cupertino's gone to a heck of a lot of trouble for nothing -- check after the break for a screen grab (in Japanese) of the trademark application.

ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS phone for consumers, launches tomorrow for $90

When Mozilla said devices running Firefox OS would be cheap, we didn't know they'd be this cheap. Telefónica has just tweeted that the ZTE Open will be launching in Spain tomorrow for €69, which translates to around $90 and is a good $30 less than the cheapest developer unit we'd seen until now. And here's where it gets pretty wild: that price includes €30 ($39) of airtime for prepaid customers. When we played with the Open back in February at Mobile World Congress, we weren't exactly blown away by it, but we're arguably not the target demographic. The real question is whether Spaniards will be willing to sacrifice access to Google's services and ecosystem with devices like the Vodafone Smart Mini now selling for as little as €49 ($65).
