Thermometer Delivers Diagnosis, Calls Doctor

KinsaRoss Brooks for PSFK 2013-05-03 19:32:09 UTC

The thermometer is a timeless medical device, but you often need to be familiar with common symptoms and what to do if you have them for it really come in handy. The Kinsa Smart Thermometer offers a new way of taking the effort out of diagnosing and dealing with everyday illness.

Its design is straight-forward. There’s no battery, processor or display in the device itself. You just plug it into your iPhone headphone jack, and the Kinsa app will display the patient’s temperature.

It can also provide treatment advice and what to watch for when it comes to more serious symptoms. If you feel your condition is dire, the app can even call your doctor or book appointments at your local medical clinic.

In less serious circumstances, the Kinsa app can be used to access local groups to check if there are any seasonal illnesses circulating. It’s also possible to create user profiles and keep track of your temperature over a longer period of time, perfect for those who like to keep a close eye on their health.

The Smart Thermometer is part of a larger plan to turn the general public into a frontline of defense when it comes to preventing illness. If you’re interested in getting your hands on one, all it takes is a $25 pledge on Indiegogo.

Add Wi-Fi to Practically Anything With This Arduino-Compatible Chip

Vignesh By Vignesh Ramachandran2013-05-04 00:50:55 UTC

You can add it to a motion detector. You can add it to a security camera. Heck, the creators of a tiny new Wi-Fi board even joke that you can add it to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

The Spark Core board, from Spark Devices, can make any of your projects Wi-Fi-enabled and thus connected to the Internet, as explained in the video above.

For techies and do-it-yourselfers out there, the Core board features a 72 MHz ARM Cortex M3 processor, a Wi-Fi module, wireless programming, pin outs and peripherals. Best of all, the board is Arduino-compatible and you can even code wirelessly. To set up the Core, you use a companion app for Wi-Fi configuration.

In the creators' Kickstarter campaign video, co-founder Zach Supalla said they tackled the problem of adding Wi-Fi to a product, which he says is usually either very difficult, very expensive or both.

The possibilities for making hardware Internet-connected with the Core are infinite, according to its creators. Sample projects they suggest include a robot you can control with your phone and an LCD fridge magnet that displays your favorite Twitter feed. If you want to design more complex projects with the Core, the company has an available battery shield, relay shield, JTAG shield and a "shield shield" to work with.

Spark Devices' Kickstarter campaign has gained serious momentum: With 29 days still left to go, the Kickstarter project had far surpassed its $10,000 goal, reaching over $96,000 in pledges by Friday afternoon. Backers can get a Spark Core for a $39 pledge.

The creators developed the Spark Core at hardware startup accelerator HAXLR8R in Shenzhen, China.

What sorts of creative uses can you think of for a board like this? Share your ideas in the comments.

How to Really Delete Reddit Posts

RedditimageLeslie Meredith for TechNewsDaily 2013-05-04 00:28:30 UTC

Even when you're using a fake name on a social media site, your comments can come back to haunt you. Just ask notorious Redditor violentacrez, who was unmasked last fall by Adrian Chen, a reporter for Gawker.

Is it possible to protect your privacy online? Some say no.

"Trying to take something off the Internet is like trying to remove pee from a swimming pool," wrote Redditor steste.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and others, Reddit asks for no personal information to create an account. However, it still records and retains the IP address from which the account was made, which can be enough for law enforcement to help establish a user's identity. And in the case of violentacrez, an ambitious reporter could find his identity through his comments and associations with other Redditors.

Violentacrez, aka Michael Brutsch, became a target for his very offensive posts. Your posts may be just a bit embarrassing — in hindsight.

You can delete a regrettable comment or your entire account on any social media network, but your data can remain on a site's servers indefinitely. Whereas other companies, such as Google, have declined to say how long they keep users' content and associated IP addresses, Reddit is explicit in its new terms of service.

"This means that, by default, the [IP addresses] are not deleted from our servers — ever — and will still be accessible after your account is deleted," states the new privacy policy, which takes effect on May 15. Reddit also keeps copies of the entire site on its servers, which are refreshed every 90 days.

However, Reddit is working on an option that would allow users to completely remove all of their posts when they delete their accounts. In the meantime, here's a workaround for removing old posts for good.

Deleting posts removes them from public view but not from Reddit's servers. Instead, Redditors  should overwrite them.

So, the trick is to go back into your Reddit account and replace old comments that you want to erase with something innocuous, such as "I like turtles."

Bad Lip Reading Makes 'Walking Dead' Even Weirder

Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-03 21:07:42 UTC

With humans engaging in a mega-violent battle against flesh-eating zombies in a post-apocalyptic hell-scape, AMC's The Walking Dead could definitely be classified as weird. But it's not exactly what you'd call funny.

Dub in some ridiculous dialogue, however, and the show suddenly becomes both hilarious and more strange. YouTube channel Bad Lip Reading takes The Walking Dead from weird to weirder with a few tweaks to the show's audio.

It's understandably popular, with nearly 500,000 views since going online Thursday. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Ad Dials Up Some More Apple Bashing

Todd-wasserman By Todd Wasserman2013-05-03 18:24:52 UTC

Ever wish you could answer a call on your iPhone even though your hands are covered with spare rib sauce? It happens. Yet with Samsung's would-be iPhone 5-killer, the Galaxy S4, that's not an issue.

Hands-free control is one of the features highlighted in this 90-second ad, which broke Thursday night during Conan. Another is the ability to interact with TVs and S-Beam, Samsung's name for its NFC capability.

The bells and whistles are presented in an offhand fashion, the way consumers might actually use them, in this spot called "Pool Party," which takes place during what looks like a high school graduation party.

As with previous Samsung ads, the tone is dry and droll with much of the humor coming from Samsung fans confronting clueless consumers of other devices. After seeing two kids S-Beam a photo to one another, for instance, a middle-aged lady tries to do the same with her iPhone only to be told that her phone doesn't do that.

The ad comes after the brand launched a few other TV spots around the world playing up the S4's features like Group Play and a dual-shot camera. Samsung appears to be dialing up the iPhone comparisons in the U.S. market, where that device is more of a factor than overseas.

Intel's New CEO Faces a Major Challenge

Brian-intelJessica Leber for MIT Technology Review 2013-05-03 15:57:18 UTC

Intel's new chief executive must reverse the last decade of declining market share.

Intel's new CEO Brian M. Krzanich, elected by the board this week to replace retiring chief executive Paul Otellini, is a longtime Intel insider whose vision must now guide the company through a time of tumult in the computing industry.

The world's largest chipmaker faces challenges due to slumping PC sales, and has made only small inroads into the mobile computing world so far. The vast majority of smartphones and tablets use ARM-based designs, and as a result, Intel's market share for all CPUs shipped has dropped dramatically over the last few years (see chart below).

Still, Intel is the only major company aside from Samsung that still manufactures the chips it sells, and earlier this year outgoing CEO Otellini called the company's "leading-edge fabs" Intel's greatest asset. The company's estimated $13 billion in capital expenditures this year will go partly to completing a $5 billion factory in Arizona that will make its next generation of 14 nanometer chips.

Manufacturing is where Krzanich shines. He started at Intel in 1982 as a process engineer and led the company's manufacturing and supply chain operations before become chief operating officer. During his tenure, he oversaw important transitions in Intel's manufacturing technology that have helped maintain Moore's law, a prediction that the number of integrated circuits that can be fitted onto a chip will continue doubling every two years.

In choosing Krzanich, Intel is sticking with its tried-and-true strategies of the past. And he, more than anyone, knows that Intel must keep selling chips (or start taking orders from others) to justify its massive manufacturing investments. As he told MIT Technology Review in 2010, "The most expensive thing on the planet is a half-empty fab."

This Is Sports on Google Glass

BasketballSam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-03 20:11:28 UTC

With Google Glass slowly but surely making its way into the hands of the general public, we're beginning to learn a lot more about the exciting wearable technology.

Mashable got an extended hands-on with it, and we've also seen some new apps and interesting demos emerge recently.

But ye query, loyal sports fans: "What about the games we love?"

Well, two new videos posted to YouTube this week give a us cool sneak peek. Apparently some of the earliest Google Glass adopters are amateur athletes, as well, and they've been kind enough to give the rest of us a Glass-eye view of what it's like to play basketball and hockey with the futuristic headset.

First up is this two-minute clip from Noble Ackerson. He's just shooting around by himself in a mostly empty gym, but the perspective Glass gives while still letting Ackerson move around freely is pretty cool. Check out how little the camera shakes and how you're actually able to follow along without getting nauseous:

While cool, that video is pretty pedestrian, but this six-minute upload from Joseph Lallouz shows a bit more action. He wears Glass while playing some pick-up hockey. The clip gives us views both from the bench and as he's skating around in the thick of the action. Again, the video is remarkably steady and gives us an interesting perspective:

Pretty basic stuff so far, but these two videos definitely hint at some amazing possibilities for the sports world. Imagine an NFL quarterback wearing Glass, or something like it. Or a soccer midfielder doing the same. Or an NBA ref's-eye view of crucial calls.

As far as what actually ends up happening, we'll just have to stay tuned — but rest assured that major change is coming to the sports fan experience as wearable tech continues to mature.

Days App Will Change How You Share Photos With Friends

New-lifelogging-photoDani-fankhauser-(1-of-1) By Dani Fankhauser2013-05-03 15:30:18 UTC

One morning you might wake up, roll over, grab your phone and flip through the pictures from last night, from yesterday. "Was it really that great of a time?" you ask, and you've got a stream of photos to help you answer, the ones you want to delete from memory and the ones you'll frame on the wall, or at least post to Facebook.

An iOS app released Friday called Days, built by TechStars company Wander, aims to replace your phone's camera roll, with a twist: Instead of deciding which photos to share, you'll decide which to remove (but photos are also saved to your phone, so you don't lose them completely). The photos you share will be grouped into a 24-hour set, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m. on your local time zone, what founder and CEO Jeremy Fisher calls "the folk definition of what a day is."

The hope, Fisher says, is to capture a narrative by plotting these pictures in a group, to make a place for those photos that would not make sense on their own. You can't cheat: You can only add photos you've taken inside the app, and they will be timestamped.

Before public release, the app was used in a beta of fewer than 100 users.

"Big users are parents with young kids," Fisher says.

"Big users are parents with young kids," Fisher says.

The reason Days will be appealing to new parents, vacationers and people with mundane lives alike is that the day is a great normalizer. No matter how many photos are taken (on someone's too-awesome trip to Spain), each person you follow can share just once per day, which addresses oversharing and activity stream hijacking unlike any other social app.

Your friends (and mom) don't need to have Days to see your photos — you can share a day via text message, email, or post to Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. Privacy controls are standard — your account is either public or private, but you can still share to social networks from a private account if you'd like to share selectively.

One of the best features of Days was created by accident. When you look at a Day, you might see that some photos behave as GIFs, a theme present in recent apps including Vine and Cinemagram.

But the decision to loop photos was to cut down on the volume — that thing where you take a bunch of photos in a row trying to catch the whole family without anyone blinking, or the dog in the air capturing the frisbee. The feature was meant to save you from having to delete duplicates, but turned out to capture movement through still photos (although if you'd like you can "split" the animation).

Days is designed to make documenting your life a habit.

Days is designed to make documenting your life a habit. Fisher, a who says he is a longtime fan of National Geographic, says he wants to empower people to see the world through others' eyes, as photojournalism does, but the app helps regular people document daily life.

Of course, Days' visual diary might bring to mind the potential of the camera on Google Glass. Fisher confirms the company will be building for Glass.

The decision to design for a 24-hour day was far from arbitrary. Fisher notes that phone numbers are seven digits because seven is a magic number for human memory. A text message was 160 characters because researchers found, amidst bandwidth limitations, it was sufficient space to communicate most thoughts (and the length of a tweet was inherited from text messages). The day is already a unit we use to organize memories.

The company, which has raised a $1.2 million investment, had an focus on location earlier in its beta. Founders are Fisher and Keenan Cummings, creative director, and the team includes two engineers and a operations and community manager.

Google Glass: The User Experience

Ryan By Ryan Lytle2013-05-03 18:40:22 UTC

It would be an understatement to note that there is hype surrounding Google Glass. In a recent op-ed, Mashable's Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff called Google Glass the future of technology, and many businesses are already making moves to get their services on the product.

We've had a pair of Google Glass in the office for the past week, and as more information has been released about the wearable computing device, the more questions and feedback we get from our community.

To help answer some of the many questions we've received, we will be hosting a live Q&A-style Google+ Hangout today at 3 p.m. ET on the Mashable Google+ page. Join Mashable Tech Editor Pete Pachal and Senior Tech Analyst Christina Warren as they discuss their experiences with Google Glass so far and answer questions from our community.

If you have questions or comments, please share them below and we'll try to answer them during the Hangout.
