BlackBerry Q10

Diehard BlackBerry users who can't get along without a QWERTY keyboard will appreciate the Q10, which brings the platform into the modern smartphone era. However, the device is unlikely to win over any converts from Android, iOS, or even Windows Phone.

DNP This week on gdgt BlackBerry Q10, Cordcutting, Dell XPS 18 AllinOneCould you drop your home Internet service?

In this week's featured gdgt discussion, we discuss cord-cutting of a different kind: While you might associate the topic with ditching cable TV in favor of streaming, more people are actually dropping their home broadband service in favor of mobile data, public hotspots, and mooching off of friends or relatives. Could you do it? Would you?

Dell XPS 18 All-in-One

Dell's XPS 18 manages to take desktop computing and give it a portable twist -- without making sacrifices. The XPS 18 is a unique approach to the all-in-one, as Dell uses a tablet in place of a monitor to make the whole system more portable. Dell has been successful in the desktop all-in-one market before, and they keep up that tradition even in the iconoclastic XPS 18.

Sony Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speaker (SRS-BTV5)

Even at its price, the small and portable Sony SRS-BTV5 gets drowned out in a sea of affordable wireless speakers. At this price point Sony needed to really hit it out of the park to make the SRS-BTV5 stand out, but they swung and missed. For $30 more you can get Logitech's Mobile Boombox, which is just as small with better sound, or pick up the Phoenix from Beacon Audio; while its sound is comparable to the BTV5, it's also $20 cheaper.

Yesterday a series of leaked PowerPoint slides in the Washington Post revealed a program codenamed PRISM that allowed government investigators access to data from a number of top internet companies. That leak has been followed up in the last 24 hours by a series of blanket denials as tech companies (and their CEOs, including Google's Larry Page and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg) claimed they do not give "backdoor access," only generally acknowledging that they do respond to legal requests for specific information. Meanwhile government officials including President Obama responded to the claims mostly by claiming whatever is going on -- including the bulk collection of call logs by the NSA -- is legal and has been "repeatedly authorized by Congress."

Tonight, a New York Times article may be able to explain the difference between the statements, citing information from people briefed on the program and lawyers that handle the requests. Their report is that the companies discussed ways to "efficiently and securely" share data about foreign users in response to requests made under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. In contrast to the initial reports of direct server access, this report claims when a government request is made under an individual FISA request, it's reviewed by company lawyers and then sent over, sometimes electronically using company servers. That can include an investigation into a specific person, logs of certain search terms, and in some cases "real-time transmission of data." One specific instance cited involved an NSA agent going on-site at a company's HQ, installing government software on its server and remaining there for several weeks to offload data to a laptop.

The Best Sun-Protective, Yet Still Chic, Clothes

Sure, it may be raining out, but the sun will come back. And while the prospect of following doctor's orders to slather on sunscreen every two hours seems neither fun (or even feasible), there's a workaround: Wear sun-proof clothing that has been tested for Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF).  Unlike sunscreens that wear down eventually with time and exposure to water, or flimsy t-shirts through which rays can seep, these clothes can give consistent protection on the body parts they're covering. Clothing that does the best job carries a UPF rating from 15 (good) to 50+ (excellent), and our favorite options are colorful rash guards and sun block shirts that are not just for the beach, but can be layered into your look — imagine them color blocked with a fun skirt and heels — all sweltering season long. Click ahead to see our favorites for summer.

‘Michelle Obama of China’ Will Not Meet Michelle Obama

"Michelle Obama of China" Peng Liyuan will not be meeting real Michelle Obama during her weekend at "Camp David of the West" Rancho Mirage. (She and husband Xi Jinping are probably chilling with Barack Obama in southern California as we speak.) This is either a thoughtless snub, a shrewdly calculated snub, or evidence that MObama "is just really busy" because Sasha and Malia are about to start summer vacation.

Foreign Policy's Isaac Stone Fish points out that Peng Liyuan's career as a Chinese military propaganda singer means she is a high-ranking member of the People's Liberation Army, and thus a more polarizing figure than you would usually find in a MObama meet-and-greet. (Peng sang in praise of the Chinese military in Tiananmen Square after the 1989 crackdown.) Nonetheless, the Chinese are expected to be "disappointed" by MObama's absence, in part because she is a popular figure in China, too. Commentators like to point to Peng Liyuan and her daughter as emblems of modern Chinese femininity. Michelle and her daughters are often held up for comparison, the New York Times explains,

Will we at least get to see some Chinese First Lady outfits? Before arriving in California, Peng and Xi toured Latin America. Above, outfits Peng wore in Mexico and Costa Rica. (Peplum!) Unfortunately, Peng is not so good at posing to maximize outfit exposure — perhaps because nations that lack free speech have relatively weak paparazzi corps.

It's sure looking like we'll be getting ourselves a seventh version of iOS come Monday morning, but we'd guess Apple has some other surprises in store for the keynote that will kick off WWDC 2013. New laptops? Probably. An updated desktop operating system? Possibly. A television? Unlikely, but hey, anything can happen. We'll be there to help you find out, liveblogging the keynote from start to finish and bringing you all the news as it happens. We'll also be doing a live, streaming broadcast before the keynote to whet your appetite and get you up to speed on what to expect from the day's Apple news. After the event we'll be streaming live again, to give you a video rundown of all the news -- and maybe an early look at the day's new products. DNP Bing Translator comes to Windows 8

The Bing Translator app has been available on Windows Phone for some time, but today it's heading over to Windows 8. According to a post on the browser's Search Blog, the program was built "from the ground up" for Windows devices, and it utilizes the Share Charm to let you translate text from within any Windows 8 app. Otherwise, it works much the same as on other platforms: by using your gadget's camera to parse more than 40 languages (of course, you can type text to translate as well). The Translator app also includes offline support, so you can download language packs for use without a WiFi connection. Check it out for yourself by heading to the download page in the Windows Store.

Amazon launches indie game portal

Amazon feels for indie devs. So much so, that it's set up a standalone Indie Game storefront on its site specifically to highlight these gaming gems that might otherwise get overlooked. The new portal, designed to "increase discoverability," will feature select games for Mac, PC and the browser, but Amazon's not just leaving it at that. To properly promote this new storefront launch, it's tossing in some limited time promos to entice gamers to click and explore the catalog. From today until July 23rd, Amazon customers can purchase Indie Bundles containing up to 10 games for $10, as well as receive download codes, good for three pre-selected games, with every purchase (available until July 17th). The company's also throwing its considerable weight around in the publicity department, with a weekly spotlight Q&A feature aimed at shedding some light on developers and a Gamer's Choice award; a distinction that nets a game prominent storefront promotion. Feel like rewarding innovation, creativity, your penchant for slack-jawed amusement and the little guy? Yeah, us too. So check out the source and vote with your dollars.

Sarah Jessica Parker Working on Shoe Collection

After stepping down from her creative director role at Halston two years ago, Sarah Jessica Parker hasn't included "designer" in her many slash-jobs for some time now. But that's changing: come 2014, she's launching what Vogue deems "a serious shoe collection" (not a joke, apparently), with Manolo Blahnik CEO George Malkemus as her business partner. Named "SJP," the range will consist of shoes and sandals for $200 to $300, bags for around $700, and trench coats, sold exclusively at Nordstrom.

Parker, who has clearly come a long way since the days of her Bitten line for Steve & Barry's (memories!), tells Vogue that much of her footwear experience comes from ... yes, Carrie Bradshaw: "I got to play that role, I wore a lot of shoes ... and by default I learned an enormous amount." An education that can be boiled down to one word: Manolos.

Democrats Confident GOP Will Continue to Reveal Gross Ignorance About Women

Judging from EMILY’s List e-mail blasts and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz's remarks on MSNBC, Politico is pretty sure Democrats are planning to repeat the surprisingly effective “war on women” strategy in the 2014 election.

The most recent gaffe came from Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss, pictured, who echoed amateur zoologist Erick Erickson during Tuesday's Senate Armed Services Committee, when he suggested that military sexual assault is an unfortunate side effect of nature and not, as fellow committee member Senator Claire McCaskill stressed, an abuse of power. “The hormone level created by nature sets in place the possibility for these types of things to occur,” he said. Sure enough, a slew of Democratic legislators offered Politico condemnations of Chambliss — and he's not even seeking reelection in 2014.

Pussy Riot Makes First U.S. Appearance

Two members of Russian feminist collective and punk band Pussy Riot doffed their balaclavas to speak with a group of activists at Lower East Side bookstore Bluestockings this week. The women made their first-ever visit to the U.S. in order to promote the June 10 HBO documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer — very quietly. According to the Guardian, the appearance was unannounced, and the 50 or so attendees were asked to keep news of the band’s arrival off the Internet — “all security measures, they said, to avoid the Russian security services that imprisoned their bandmates and continue to target them.” (The Guardian also adhered to a 48-hour embargo and did not photograph the women unmasked.) The women, who went by the pseudonyms Fara and Shaiba, also met with Occupy activists last week, in order to “have a dialogue” with the existing networks that have rallied around Pussy Riot.

According to the always erudite "people with knowledge of the plans," Cupertino has tapped wireless distributor firm Brightstar to help run the exchange program through Apple stores -- allowing customers instantaneous trade-ins instead of having to deal with the endless shipping wait times of online exchanges. We've reached out to Apple for comment, but if the news is true, you can bet that Cupertino isn't likely to confirm it until next week at WWDC.

Hulu Plus gets a whole new look on the iPad

Hulu may be constantly on the brink of a buyout, but that doesn't mean the current owners are just sitting about waiting for some high roller to come along. In fact, over the last couple of months the streaming service has undergone a pretty impressive transformation. There have been a few new features added and some licensing deals struck. But, most noticeably, Hulu Plus has received a spiffy new look across almost all platforms. Today it's the iPad's turn to cash in and the new experience has a heavy focus on discovering content. Tapping on a show brings up the "discover" panel, which provides you with a quick shortcut to play the first, next or latest episode (depending on where yo left off) along with details about the program. If you want to keep looking, but don't want to drop back out to the card-like UI of the home screen, swiping left or right will take you to the next collection or season. If you're in the middle of watching an episode of SNL then remember you forgot to add the latest episode of Misfits to your queue, you can pinch the video to minimize it quickly add it then pop back to a full screen of Weekend Update without skipping a beat. Of course, multitasking is in-app only -- so you wont be able to shrink the episode down to the corner while you search for stills from Good Burger. There are also a bunch of more minor tweaks, such as inline clip playback and curated collections. After the break you'll find the complete changelog as well as a video walk through of the updated app.

• Minimize a video during playback by tapping the minimize icon or "pinching" the video. The video will continue playing at the bottom of the screen while you use the app to browse, search, or do anything else you can think of.

• Tap on an image of any episode, show, or season to take a peek at what's inside using the new discovery panel. Have fun casually exploring old episodes within a season or learning more about a new show with as little effort as possible. (Want to get straight to watching content? Just double-tap any image).

• Check out collections of editorially curated shows, clips, and movies. We recommend starting with the "Trending Now" collection of the day's hottest clips – it's a great way to see what everybody's talking about right now.

• Watch clips and short-form content inline, just one tap away.

We've made sure to keep all of your favorite features intact, including the popular Kids Lock (iPad-only) which limits the app to ad-free, safe and enjoyable content from our selection of Kids programming.

Bug report hints that a mature build of OS X 109 may be ready for WWDC

From the initial preview to its final release, Mountain Lion took a journey that lasted over five months and saw 269 builds of the update before finally going gold in July of 2012. In fact, it was more than a month after its big WWDC keynote that Apple finally got OS X 10.8 out the door. But, things may be a little different this time around. Bug reports are starting to pop up in Cupertino's Radar system with the operating system build number 13A451. The first half, "13A," strongly suggests platform in question is OS X 10.9, since Mountain Lion was 12A, Lion was 11A, and so on, and so forth. The second half implies that this is the 451st build of the (not so) mysterious OS known only at 13A. That means that there have already been almost twice as many internal releases of 10.9 (presumably Cougar or Cloud Leopard... or maybe Scottish Fold?) as there were of 10.8 at the time of its release. This could indicate that Apple is preparing a substantial overhaul of its desktop OS, or it could just be that the company wants to ensure it avoids the usual flood of issues that accompany upgrades to the operating system. Either way, with WWDC right around the corner we're sure the mystery will be solved soon enough.

ConnectED program could deliver 100Mbps broadband to 99 percent of US students

President Obama Unveils ConnectED Initiative to Bring America's Students into Digital Age

Calls on FCC to leverage E-Rate program to have 99 percent of students connected within 5 years

WASHINGTON, DC - President Obama today unveiled a bold, new initiative called ConnectED to connect 99 percent of America's students to the internet through high-speed broadband and high-speed wireless within 5 years, calling on the FCC to modernize and leverage its existing E-Rate program to meet that goal. The President also directed the federal government to make better use of existing funds to get Internet connectivity and educational technology into classrooms, and into the hands of teachers trained on its advantages. And he called on businesses, states, districts, schools and communities to support this vision. This ambitious initiative does not require Congressional action.

"We are living in a digital age, and to help our students get ahead, we must make sure they have access to cutting-edge technology," said President Obama. "So today, I'm issuing a new challenge for America – one that families, businesses, school districts and the federal government can rally around together – to connect virtually every student in America's classrooms to high-speed broadband internet within five years, and equip them with the tools to make the most of it."

Preparing America's students with the skills they need to get good jobs and compete with countries around the world will rely increasingly on interactive, individualized learning experiences driven by new technology. But today, millions of students lack high-speed broadband access and fewer than 20 percent of educators say their school's Internet connection meets their teaching needs. ConnectED will bring high-speed Internet within their reach, with a particular benefit for rural communities that have lagged behind in connectivity.

In addition to connecting America's students, ConnectED harnesses the ingenuity of the American private sector get new technologies into students' hands and support digital learning content.

ConnectED also better invests existing federal funds to ensure that every educator in America receives support and training in using education technology tools to improve student learning. For more details on the ConnectED initiative, click HERE.

The ambitious new vision for digital, connected learning builds on work the Administration has done over the past four years to increase broadband access across the country.

GIF Lesson: How to Correctly Apply Bronzer

Welcome to sunscreen week at the Cut, where we provide you products reviews, tips, and news you'll need for better sun safety.

There is no good nor safe way to tan in the sun. None. As advised by our derm expert, the best way to get that look is from self-tanning products or with makeup. In our latest GIF beauty tutorial, makeup artist Daniel Martin shows us where to best apply powder bronzer on the face for a natural-looking glow. The key is to apply product to the "higher" regions on the face that usually get the most amount of sun — your cheeks, nose, and forehead, mainly.

Click below for a step-by-step explanation. Throughout, he used MAC's Bronzing Powder and a Sigma makeup brush, but feel free to use any products you like.

Step 1: Swirl your makeup brush in bronzing powder and lightly stroke onto the cheeks.

Step 2: Sweep the product onto the temples and across the forehead for a more blended, natural look.

Step 3: Then brush bronzer down the center of the nose. This is usually the part of your face that naturally gets the most sun.

Step 4: Smile into the mirror to help accentuate the apples of your cheeks.

Step 5: Apply more product onto the apples of your cheeks to increase your faux-bronzed glow.

A Celebration of Esther Williams, Hollywood’s Mermaid

Esther Williams, the synchronized-swimming dream girl from Technicolor movie musicals of the forties and fifties, died this morning in her sleep at the age of 91.

Raised in California, Williams was a champion swimmer when the outbreak of World War II derailed her ability to compete in the 1940 Summer Olympics. Her specialties were "male only" strokes like the butterfly. She held three national titles at the age of 16.

She signed a contract with MGM in 1941. Her debut as a leading lady came in 1944's Bathing Beauty, as seen above. In her memoir, Million Dollar Mermaid, Williams described the critical response to Bathing Beauty as "glowing."

In reality, the reviews were mixed. New York Times critic Bosley Crowther found the production "gaudy," but Williams so lived up to the title that he ultimately dubbed Bathing Beauty a success:

Williams quickly became one of Hollywood's most bankable actresses, starring in dozens of films. The Associated Press's obituary recounts how Williams "laughed as much as anyone" at Funny Girl Fanny Brice's dig, "Esther Williams? Wet, she's a star. Dry, she ain't."

Williams married four times. At age 19, she married a "smart, handsome, dependable, and dull" man she met in college. At age 24, she married actor Ben Gage and had three children with him. At age 43, she married her Dangerous While Wet co-star and The Magic Fountain director Fernando Lamas, who forced her to give up her career.

After Lamas's death, Williams reemerged into the public eye. She co-hosted the synchronized swimming competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, launched a swimwear line, and produced video swimming lessons for children. At age 73, she married actor Edward Bell, with whom she lived out the rest of her life.

Insert Coin The Rainbow Wizard turns your flash gun into a kaleidoscope video

While the tech fraternity is obsessed with perfect white balance, the creative community may want a bit of variety. That's the idea behind the Rainbow Flash Wizard, a device that lets photographers coat their subjects in any color that takes their fancy. In essence, the device is a color wheel that you can mount over your flash gun -- giving you a rainbow of new lighting options. As well as creative settings, seasoned pros can use the unit to correct under or overexposed shots without resorting to post-processing. If you're interested in getting your hands on one, the device's creators have taken to Kickstarter to raise $78,000, with a $70 pledge getting you an early-bird discount.

Previous project update: The Omni VR treadmill smashed its $150,000 goal to pieces, and is now pushing well beyond the half-million mark.

Box launches revenue-sharing scheme for app devs, iOS and Android SDKs

As great as free server space is for us regular folk, businesses use cloud storage too (and they actually pay for it). In an effort to attract the attention of mobile app developers, and ultimately keep enterprise clients happy, Box has launched a revenue-sharing program called $rev for those who create business-focused software integrated with its cloud storage platform. It's pretty simple, really. Step one: get your app to play nice with Box; step two: people use the app; step three: make it rain. By getting an app into Box's OneCloud club and enrolling in the $rev program, devs can net up to 15 percent of the "per seat price" in rewards. Although its API is already available, Box has launched iOS and Android SDKs in tandem with $rev to make the integration step a bit easier; more SDKs are expected in the "coming weeks." The $rev scheme is currently in a closed beta phase, but it'll open up in the near future. Interested app crafters can learn more about getting paid by Box, download the SDKs and sign up to $rev at the source links below.
