Zuckerberg Forming Political Organization to Push For Immigration Reform

Zuckerberg-immigrationAlex Fitzpatrick2013-03-25 19:22:01 UTC

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly forming a political advocacy organization along with other businesses leaders that will make economic and business arguments in favor of comprehensive immigration reform as well as other long-term issues they deem important to their companies' long-term economic growth.

Republicans and Democratic strategists alike will help guide the yet-unnamed group, according to anonymous sources that spoke with Politico.

The embryonic group's formation comes as technology businesses and leaders have been increasingly vocal about immigration reform. Several influential leaders in the space, including AOL co-founder Steve Case and Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt, have been pushing Congress to reform immigration in a way that makes it easier for high-skilled foreigners to stay, innovate and build businesses in the United States. Failure to do so, advocates argue, would risk letting the United States fall behind international competitors.

Zuckerberg has been ramping up his political activity in recent months, having hosted his first political fundraiser — for New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie — in January. He was also a signatory to a group of business leaders' recent letter to Congress calling for immigration reform. However, he has not personally been a vociferous advocate for any particular political issue.

Also reportedly involved with the group is Joe Green, Zuckerberg's first college roommate and co-founder of digital politics service NationBuilder. Green has been working as an "entrepreneur-in-residence" since leaving NationBuilder last month.

Facebook has declined comment to Mashable. We have also reached out to Green for any comment about the group's plans, and we will update this post with any response.

Is Netflix Hurting Television Buzz?

Netflix-tvChristine Erickson2013-03-25 12:05:42 -0400

We've all been there — a Sunday afternoon marathoning Lost or some other show that's been aired for years, yet we never got around to watching it.

Now think about when a new show premieres. Most of us whip out our phones and share the excitement along with thousands of other viewers watching on social media. Live events tend to generate a mass amount of buzz because we're all watching together at the same time.

Netflix has experimented with a new way to watch television by releasing all episodes from season one of the original series House of Cards. By comparing similar shows on various networks, our friends at Mashwork have come up with an interesting conclusion on how this affects social buzz, shown in the infographic below.

SEE ALSO: Netflix: 'House of Cards' Is Our Most Popular Show Right Now

In order to do so, the team analyzed tweets from shows like The Walking Dead, which premiered in 2010. Twitter has grown from 15 million users in 2009, to 200 million as of December 2012, as Statista points out, and The Walking Dead still had the most popular premiere out of all the shows.

House of Cards had the highest percentage of overall buzz occur during the first week following the premiere. That buzz also decreased at a faster rate than any of the other shows.

Take a look at the infographic, and tell us what you think of Netflix's distribution method. Is sustained buzz more important that people professing to binge viewing in a short period of time? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

RebelMouse Will Now Auto-Update Your Blog for $10 a Month

RebelmouseSeth Fiegerman2013-03-25 20:30:03 UTC

RebelMouse, a social publishing service, has received plenty of buzz for helping users create a dedicated page for all of the content they share on social networks. Now, the company is launching a paid feature called Powered Sites that lets users create and manage a more social webpage from their own custom domain or sub-domain.

For $9.99 a month, RebelMouse will automatically populate your website with your posts from social networks like Twitter and Facebook, and it will provide you with a full publishing platform to post videos, blog entries and slideshows. The goal is to make it easier for anyone with a webpage to keep it active and fresh even if you're not actually updating it on a regular basis.

"Five years ago, if your last blog post was three weeks old, you felt great. You were a regular blogger. Now, real-time news has become so prevalent that people are starting to feel embarrassed about their blogs and hide them," said Paul Berry, CEO of RebelMouse and former CTO of The Huffington Post. With Powered Sites, Berry says RebelMouse is essentially "bringing your blog back from the dead" through a mix of "curation and original content."

For example, let's say you run a literary blog in your spare time. Ordinarily, you can either go through the effort of publishing a blog post or let your blog gather dust. If your site is powered by RebelMouse, however, you might simply retweet an article on Twitter from The New York Times Book Review section and that will then be posted as a new piece of content on your blog.

RebelMouse already powers some websites for free for select retailers, non-profits and notable individuals in an effort to "iron the kinks out," according to Berry, but now it is rolling out the option to any user for a monthly fee. Berry believes there is a big and potentially lucrative opportunity to help users better manage their websites.

"The domain registry business is huge," Berry says, but he argues it's also very much broken. "There's like 0.01% of people who are happy with the domain they bought."

RebelMouse launched in mid-2012 and has created 265,000 sites which attract two million unique monthly visitors. Those who don't want to fork over 10 bucks a month can still sign up to create a free social page hosted on RebelMouse.com, but it won't work with a custom domain and it will feature more RebelMouse branding.

Powered Sites isn't the first premium service RebelMouse has introduced. It also offers a sponsored content program for about $10,000 a month, which helps big publishers and brands create native ads.

RebelMouse has raised more than $3 million to date from Lerer Ventures, First Round Capital, Betaworks and other notable investors.

Catch Up on HBO and Showtime Shows For Free This Week on Xfinity TV

Girls1Samantha Murphy2013-03-25 16:29:38 UTC

If you're a Comcast subscriber who is seasons behind on shows such as Game of Thrones, Dexter, Downton Abbey and Girls — and without access to premium channels such as HBO and Showtime — it's your lucky week.

Comcast is giving all customers of its Xfinity TV service free week-long access to catch up on a ton of TV shows they may have missed.

"We're calling it the the biggest catch-up in TV history," a Comcast spokesperson told Mashable. "We've seen a huge trend in binge-viewing, where people watch the same show in a series for hours. This is a great opportunity to plow through your favorite shows."

More than 100 TV series across 30 premium cable and broadcast are now available on demand via the Xfinity TV app, Xfininity.com/TV and through the TV service, from Monday until Sunday. Although the TV's traditional on-demand subscription gives viewers some access to shows throughout the month, this "Watchathon" promotion will give access to the whole season or full series.

The catalog features older shows such as The Sopranos, Sex & The City and The Wire, as well as new ones such as Vikings, Elementary and more.

For subscribers without an online account set up, start the two-step process here.

Average Mobile Customer Already Owns 2 Unused Cellphones

Matt Petronzio2013-03-25 15:37:48 UTC

Although 45% of American adults own smartphones, only about 11% of mobile devices are recycled, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's latest data. When you think about big tech companies and the new smartphone models they release every year or so, that's a pretty staggering statistic.

But as smartphone use becomes more widespread around the world, mobile consumers are beginning to understand how recycling and donating their devices can create a positive impact.

The infographic below, created by Love2Recycle, shows us why we need a smartphone recycling revolution. Did you know that the average smartphone user has two phones he or she doesn't use? How about that only 0.001-0.003% of electronic equipment is recycled each year? Smartphone recycling has a lot of potential to help create a better and cleaner world, but mobile consumers need to take action.

Do you recycle or donate your unused mobile devices? Let us know how in the comments.

Evernote vs. Google Keep: Which Does More?

Evernote-v-google-keepChristina Warren2013-03-25 20:55:34 UTC

Now that Google Keep is officially out in the wild, how does Google's note-taking and syncing service compare with longtime favorite Evernote?

From the moment Google Keep was accidentally leaked, it looked like Google was building an Evernote clone. In the wake of the official release, its name, announcement video and aspects of the user interface all evoke a certain Evernote-like quality.

I spent some time over the past few days comparing the latest Evernote mobile app and web app with Google Keep on the web and on Android.

Here's what we found:

Evernote and Google Keep are both services that let users create and store audio notes or voice-to-text dictated notes, memos, checklists and images. Both offer up a way to seamlessly sync this data with the web — and in the case of Evernote — other clients.

The biggest difference is that, at least right now, Evernote is a much, much more mature app.

One of Evernote's hallmark features is the concept of notebooks. Users can put documents, photos, snippets, lists and audio clips in assorted notebooks for access later. Users can also extensively tag any item for easy search later on.

With Google Keep, you can either archive a note or keep it on your home screen, but you can't organize notes into their own categories or separate work spaces.

Moreover, Google Keep does not have a tagging system, so search is limited to what text is contained in the note itself.

Verdict: Evernote is more robust and has more options for organization and tagging.

Google Keep and Evernote each offer a number of different note types. With Evernote, you can create a text note, an audio note (or a speech-to-text message), a photo or an attachment.

Within text notes, users can intersperse other data — including checklists and photos. You can also add audio notes directly to a text note.

With Google Keep, Notes and checklists are different. A checklist is its own type of note, and each new line is another item that can be marked checked or unchecked.

You cannot add checklists to regular notes or vice versa. Images can be added to any other note type.

Verdict: Evernote offers more flexibility for note types.

The Android version's of Google Keep and Evernote both offer widgets that can be configured on the home screen. For users running Android 4.2 "Jelly Bean" or later, the Google Keep widget can also be configured on the lock screen.

The widgets allow easy access to new text notes, new photos and new voice memos. The Evernote widget also allows users to search documents and the Google Keep widget contains a separate "checklist" item.

Both widgets also offer the ability to see recent notes directly on the widget screen. Tapping the note will open it up in a respective app. The Google Keep widget also allows users to scroll through more notes to get a good overview of what is currently not archived.

Verdict: Both Google Keep and Evernote for Android have the same functionality when it comes to creating quick notes.

Evernote for Android includes the option to create either audio notes or speech-to-text notes. With speech to text notes, you simply dictate what you want your note to say and Android's built-in speech-to-text software converts it to text. By default, the audio version of the file is stored alongside the converted text.

Users can also create pure audio notes that can be tagged with other data.

With Google Keep — audio notes work differently depending on what version of Android you're running. If you're running Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," notes are simply converted from speech to text. No audio version of the note is stored on the Google Keep servers.

If you're using Jelly Bean (we only tested this with Android 4.2, but we assume it will also work on Android 4.1), the audio file associated with the voice note is also stored.

What's interesting is that on ICS versions of Google Keep, those audio files are still playable within the Keep app.

Audio files do not play inline on the web version of Google Keep. Instead, you need to download the file (which is stored in the .3Gpp format) first.

Evernote audio files play back within the app, on the web or on the desktop apps for Windows or Mac.

Verdict: The audio experience is slightly better on Evernote but if you are running Android Jelly Bean, the speech-to-text dictation experience is nearly identical.

Both Google Keep and Evernote allow users to create notes based on a photo. Both apps also allow users to add text to that note for more context.

Photo notes are where Evernote really shines. The desktop apps include OCR functionality to turn handwritten notes into searchable text and now the Android app now supports a feature called "page camera" that is designed to help users take notes directly from a notebook. When paired with a special Moleskine with smart stickers, the experience is even better.

Google hasn't integrated any OCR or page-specific capture options for Google Keep. Instead, the camera interface is the same for whatever option is installed by that phone maker. That means that on a Nexus device, you see the stock Google camera interface, and on a phone running a skin, you see whatever interface the phone maker has designated for the camera.

We will say that Google Keep does have a better interface for browsing multiple photos associated with a note, both on its desktop and online.

Verdict: Evernote has better options for taking photos and OCR, but Google Keep has a better browsing interface.

Unless you simply want a way to easily sync basic text and photos with Google Drive, Evernote is a superior service in nearly every way.

Having said that, the fact that Google Keep does integrate with Google Drive is something that heavy Google users may find worthwhile. Furthermore, we can imagine a time when Keep may find it's way into Gmail or other Google apps in a more seamless way.

When it comes to Google Keep versus Evernote, where do you stand? Let us know in the comments.

MTV's Video Music Awards is saying goodbye to Los Angeles and hello to New York City borough Brooklyn for this year's ceremony, MTV just revealed on Instagram.

The VMAs will air live from Barclays Center on Aug. 25, becoming the first major annual show to make Brooklyn its host. MTV began teasing the announcement Monday at 8 a.m. EDT in a series of photos accompanied with hashtag #RoadToTheVMAs.

"In announcing this year’s date and location, we wanted to create a visual story that slowly gave the show’s inherently social fanbase clues to create a conversation and stir excitement," MTV President Stephen Friedman told Mashable.

#RoadToTheVMAs spotlights the VMA moonman's trek from L.A.'s Staples Center to Brooklyn, which ended at Barclays Center at 1:30 p.m. (see all images below).

"From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the spotlight on MTV," Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement. "Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca — the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country, and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013's biggest bands, like Fun and the Lumineers.”

MTV was the first brand to reach 1 million followers on Instagram in November 2012. The @MTV Instagram account now has 1.2 million and 906 images.

Last year's VMAs attracted 12.8 million comments on Twitter and Facebook. Based on stats from MTV's Twitter Tracker, these moments stood out with the social media crowd:

5. Olympian Gabby Douglas Joins Alicia Keys Onstage: 14-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys performed the title track from her forthcoming album, Girl on Fire, and she had a sporty surprise for viewers. Keys brought out Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas (see above), who showcased gymnastics swagger.

4. Rihanna Wins Video of the Year: Rihanna bookended the VMAs, opening the show with two songs and then closing it by winning Video of the Year for "We Found Love." The steamy video had previously caused controversy when it was banned in France last year.

3. Green Day Rocks Staples Center Crowd: An ill Billie Joe Armstrong lead Green Day in "Let Yourself Go," the first single from ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tre!, which drops Sept. 25. Armstrong spent loads of time with fans in the pit, hopefully keeping his germs to himself.

2. Taylor Swift Sings Her Hit Single: Decked in a red-and-white striped top, T-Swizzle channeled her inner Where's Waldo during her "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" performance. At the end, of course, MTV zoomed in on Twilight's Taylor Lautner, who had previously dated Swift.

1. Frank Ocean Shines in Emotional Performance: Frank Ocean, who in July revealed that his first "true love" was with a man before releasing his critically acclaimed Channel Orange album, gave a touching performance of "Thinking of You." Twitter users reacted in droves, making this the most-tweeted moment.
