DoSomething.Org Has 1 Million Texting Teens

Ina-fried-and-nancy-lublinLance Ulanoff2013-04-16 21:56:41 UTC

DoSomething.org, the service that uses SMS messaging to connect teens with volunteer opportunities that don’t require money, a parent or a car, is now texting with more than 1 million teens. The not-for-profit organization made the announcement Tuesday at AllThingsD's Dive into Mobile Conference in New York City.

In a world filled with teens carrying powerful smartphones capable of far more than just simple texts, it's somewhat surprising to hear how heavily DoSomething.org still relies on this feature-phone staple. "Texting is like the stepchild. It’s not as sexy as the mobile web or apps, but I’ll take it any day," quipped DoSomething.org CEO Nancy Lublin. She added that it's in a better position that email. The autofill for "email is for..." in Google is "email is for old people." (Try it; it's true.)

DoSomething is not just focused on volunteerism. It’s conducted a number of unusual push-style text programs. One that addresses teen pregnancy virtually impregnates your phone. When this cyber baby is delivered April 23 at 6:31 a.m. (text "baby" to 38383 if you want to try it), it will spend the rest of the day delivering annoying virtual baby texts. "If you can’t handle that baby, you should probably keep your zipper closed," said Lublin.

The organization also launched a text program to highlight hunger in America. "April is the hungriest month," explained Lublin. The program encourages teens to join "Team Crunchy" or "Team Smooth." Both refer to the kind of peanut butter you like. That food also happens to be an excellent source of protein, something the hungry in America desperately need.

For DoSomething to remain effective and, perhaps, capture the many millions of teens who are not using the service, it needs to go where they are. One of those places is YouTube. Lublin said teens listen to a lot of music on YouTube and the video service offers a number of key benefits for an organization like hers.

First of all, it supports bulk messaging to a channel. Secondly, as Lublin delicately put it, "They don’t fuck with the developers on YouTube." The site is all about content — no worries of an API changing and ruining or killing the experience DoSomething builds.

DoSomething is also working on changing how counseling hotlines work. This summer it'll launch a Crisis Text Hotline that could change how at-risk teens seek help. Lublin, for instance, said some of the issues teens deal with could be correlated, even though traditional hotlines are siloed. DoSomething's plan is to bring in multiple call centers at once, but make that transparent to teens so they don’t feel like they’re being handed off.

"Speed and accuracy is critical," said Lublin. The organization is working with MIT's Media Lab to auto-tag incoming texts.

There are, as Lublin is quick to acknowledge, far more than 1 million teens in the U.S., but she is committed to getting them on the service, too. She wants DoSomething to be on all social properties. "We want to be in their pockets."

Yahoo Earnings Beat Estimates, But Core Problems Remain

Marissa-mayerSeth Fiegerman2013-04-16 20:49:16 UTC

Yahoo's profits in the first quarter beat Wall Street estimates, but the company's core advertising business still appears to be heading in the wrong direction.

Yahoo reported earnings-per-share of $0.38 on revenue of $1.07 billion for the March quarter, beating the consensus estimate for earnings of $0.24 per share, but coming in below the $1.1 billion in revenue that analysts had expected. The stock declined by as much as 4% in after hours trading following the earnings release.

Search revenue increased by 6% from the same quarter a year ago to $384 million, but that wasn't enough to offset falling advertising revenues. Display revenues were particularly disappointing, declining by 11% year-over-year to $402 million, and price-per-click decreased 7%. Yahoo's $1.1 billion in revenue was down from $1.22 billion in the March quarter of 2012.

The earnings report confirms that Yahoo and its new CEO Marissa Mayer are making headway on search, but have yet to figure out how to staunch the bleeding from display revenue, which is a key part of the business.

In a statement, Mayer emphasized that Yahoo's business is stabilizing and her team is taking steps for long-term growth. "We saw continued stability in our business, strengthened our team, and started the year with fast execution against our products and partnerships," Mayer said. "We are moving quickly to roll out beautifully designed, more intuitive experiences for our users. I’m confident that the improvements we’re making to our products will set up the Company for long-term growth."

Mayer, who joined Yahoo from Google in July, has attempted to change the company's culture by initiating regular town hall meetings and free food — common at other Silicon Valley companies — and by forcing all employees to report in to the office rather than working from home. Mayer has also acquired six startups including Stamped, Jybe and OnTheAir to bring engineering talent to Yahoo and build up its mobile team.

Some of these moves have generated a fair amount of criticism, including the work-from-home decision, Mayer's determination to personally approve every new hire and Yahoo's recent $30 million acquisition of Summly, a mobile news startup run by a 17-year old. Even so, investors have remained confident in Mayer and the stock has generally continued on an upward trajectory.

Yahoo's stock has been hovering just below $25 in recent days, its highest level in nearly five years and an increase of about 50% from where it was six months ago, as investors have shown renewed optimism in the company and Mayer's leadership.

Rand McNally Brings Its Classic Road Atlas to iPad

RandmcnallyEmily Price2013-04-16 19:56:07 UTC

Before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket, a good road atlas was found in every car’s glove box, with many of those created by Rand McNally.

A staple in the space for the past 90 years, the Atlas creator celebrated its 90th birthday this week with the release of an ebook version of its 2014 Road Atlas as well as an interactive iPad app.

The digital version of the Atlas includes updated maps for all 50 states as well as Canadian provinces, Mexico and Puerto Rico, and detailed inset maps for larger cities and national parks. Much like its analog predecessor, the digital version can be used anywhere once you download it, and doesn’t require a data connection.

The first edition of Rand McNally’s Road Atlas was published in 1924. Called “Rand McNally Auto Chum,” the Atlas included hand-drawn maps of the contemporary 48 states, and only included paved roads.

The original atlas included zero miles of interstate, a far cry from 2014’s 47,000 miles of interstate and 160,000 miles of highways. It also didn’t include an index, so if you weren’t sure where a town was located, you’d have to flip through the book to find it.

Originally published in just two colors: dark blue and red, today’s version is printed in full color, making it possible to not only see the type and location of roads, but also get a feel for the terrain.

You can download Rand McNally’s 2014 Road Atlas for the iPad now from Apple’s App Store for $4.99, or pick up the analog version at your favorite bookstore.

Do you still use an Atlas when you travel? Tell us what you use for directions in the comments.

Internet Ad Revenues Top $36 Billion in 2012, Study Says

Internet-revenueSeth Fiegerman2013-04-16 17:11:02 UTC

Internet ad revenues in the U.S. increased by 15% in 2012 to $36.6 billion, driven by significant year-over-year increases in revenue for mobile, search and digital video ads, according to a new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Digital ad revenues also had a strong second-half of the year, topping $10 billion in the fourth quarter for the first time ever.

Mobile ad revenue more than doubled from the previous year to $3.4 billion from $1.6 billion, the second year in a row that mobile ad revenue has experienced triple-digit growth. Digital video revenue increased by 29% in 2012 to $2.3 billion and search ad revenue increased by 14% to $16.9 billion.

Search ad revenue still accounts for nearly half of all digital ad revenues, but it's share ticked down slightly last year while the share from mobile ads increased from 5% in 2011 to 9% in 2012. "Mobile, in particular, soared due to its ubiquity and intrinsic ability to serve as a powerful digital dashboard that travels with you from morning commute to nighttime video viewing and beyond," Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO, IAB, said in a statement.

Total digital ad revenue is now on the verge of passing broadcast television to become the top media source in the U.S. for ad revenue. It passed cable television in ad revenue in 2011.

The rivalry between New York City and Boston took a timeout Tuesday.

Following Monday's bombings at the Boston marathon, the Big Apple put aside its typical Beantown smack talk to show solidarity with its neighbor to the north. The New York Yankees, Mayor Bloomberg's office and the New York Stock Exchange all showed their support in touching ways.

What’s Next for Facebook Home

Facebook Home is going international; chat heads have escaped the Home asylum and are arriving (in a limited fashion) on the iPhone. Now the social network is teasing future upgrades.

The first update to Facebook Home, which arrived on the HTC First and for select group of Android phones less than a week ago, will arrive by the second week in May, according to Facebook CTO and VP of Engineering Mike Schroepfer and Director of Mobile Engineering Cory Ondrejka who spoke at the AllThingsD Dive into Mobile Conference in New York City.

Ondrejka and Schroepfer wouldn’t offer specifics on the next version of Facebook Home, which replaces the Android launcher with a Facebook lock screen, Cover Feed and selection of Facebook-centric features. They did say that Camera and the Phone Dialer are both interesting. These are two areas that use Android’s intent system, something which Android developers can access.

Facebook is also eyeing mobile advertising for Home and its mobile apps. They’re particularly interested in video. Schroepfer noted that Facebook has quickly taken the mobile advertising business from a “zero dollar business” to fast growth.

“A lot of our focus has been on news feed as a surface for ads, on mobile we’re particularly well-positioned,” he said. “It’s natural to weave something slightly more interesting than the ads you’re getting into the content you’re getting.

"We’re looking at all different formats for ads, video is a very interesting way to build an emotional reaction.”

Facebook is also working on Facebook Home for Android tablets, but it’s not quite ready. “We tested Facebook Home on tablets,” said Schroepfer. “It’s a great experience. We think we may have to make some adjustments to make it work on tablets."

The Facebook team also offered a bit of insight into why chat heads is so limited on iOS (those pop-up messages do not appear outside the Facebook Mobile App). They called Apple “a great partner,” but when you want to do something like a persistent message interface on Android, “you just go in and do it.”

With iOS, they explained you’d have to wait for an operating system upgrade cycle.

When AllThingsD’s Kara Swisher asked if they had even asked Apple to make this possible on iOS, Schroepfer and Ondrejka danced around the question — but indicated that they didn’t want to waste time asking for something they wouldn’t get.
