Watch This Tweet-Powered Tornado Blow Away Interns

Weather Channel interns are challenging Twitter users to blow them away for Tornado Week. They've transformed part of their office into a tweet-powered tornado simulation, putting the public in control of the wind speed.

Each mention of "#TornadoWeek" will help elevate the wind speed. The goal is to reach 1 million mentions, which "will turn up the wind for a full blown EF-5 tornado." On the Enhanced Fujita Scale, EF-5 tornadoes reach winds of more than 200 miles per hour.

At the time of this writing, the wind registered at 92 miles per hour thanks to viewers' 4,339 #TornadoWeek tweets. People can interact with the interns at @TornadoWeek.

Kevin Planovsky of Vert, the agency tracking the incoming #TornadoWeek tweets, told Mashable the wind speed is "effective wind speed, not actual wind speed; it is a representation of how it feels in the room."

The Weather Channel's Tornado Week started Monday and this year includes two new specials (The Truth About Twisters and Tornado 360) as well as tornado-themed content on TV, online and on mobile.

"For those who share our awe of tornadoes’ astonishing power and destruction, they will be glued to our programming this week," TWC President David Clark said in a statement, "and that’s as close to tornadoes as we ever want them to get."
