When the first Cannes Film Festival gem loot occurred, fresh after the Bling Ring screening, thieves literally tore out a safe filled with roughly $1 million-worth of jewels from a hotel room. The second time around, the theft happened more discreetly. According to the BBC, a single necklace by Swiss jeweler De Grisogono worth nearly $2.6 million was reported missing on Tuesday night after a celebrity-studded party celebrating De Grisogono's twentieth anniversary. The event, which took place at the five-star Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the exclusive resort town of Cap d'Antibes, even had 80 security guards and local police keeping watch over the jewels, but someone still managed to saunter away with the necklace.
In a statement released by the company, founder and creative designer Fawaz Gurosi said, "These incidents are rare; it is actually the first time it has happened in our 20-year history." And since Cannes 2013 also saw a Psy impostor running around the French Riviera and a "crazy guy" with a starter pistol, next year's festival will most likely be on lockdown. Or every celebrity will be trailed by their very own security guard, like Carey Mulligan on the Gatsby set.
