EDIT Google Groups adds new collaborative tools

Ever get the impression that organizing an event is like herding feral kittens? If so, then you might want to check out Google Groups. If you're unfamiliar with the service, Groups are basically bulletin boards that you can participate in via email, with the ability to set boards either public or private. Up until this point, some of Groups' best features have been limited to to users of Google Apps for Business, but that all changes today. Now everyone can create a group inbox and email address to collaborate on items -- which really beats wading through a gaggle of forwarded emails. You can also assign tasks to other members of the group, manage email and mark items as resolved. No time for dealing with the same questions over and over? Hit 'em back with a canned response -- don't worry, your secret's safe with us.

Vine on Android

Twitter isn't about to let Video on Instagram go completely unanswered -- it just posted an update to Vine for Android that could offer a few reasons to stay with the earlier service. Short-form movie makers on Android now have more of the features we've seen on iOS, including Facebook sharing as well as searches for hashtags and users. The release also smooths out the rough experience that has characterized the Android experience since launch, boosting both capture speeds and the final video quality. The app may still fall short of the newer Instagram release in a few areas, but those who prefer Vine's approach can grab its refresh at Google Play.

Facebook security bug exposed 6 million users' personal information

Today, Facebook announced a security bug that compromised the personal account information of six million users. In a post on the Facebook Security page, the site's White Hat team explained that some of the information the site uses to deliver friend recommendations was "inadvertently stored with people's contact information as part of their account on Facebook." When users downloaded an archive of their account via the DYI (download your information) tool, some were apparently given access to additional contact info for friends and even friends of friends. The post continues:

We've concluded that approximately 6 million Facebook users had email addresses or telephone numbers shared. There were other email addresses or telephone numbers included in the downloads, but they were not connected to any Facebook users or even names of individuals. For almost all of the email addresses or telephone numbers impacted, each individual email address or telephone number was only included in a download once or twice. This means, in almost all cases, an email address or telephone number was only exposed to one person. Additionally, no other types of personal or financial information were included and only people on Facebook – not developers or advertisers – have access to the DYI tool.

Facebook says it's temporarily disabled the DYI tool to fix the breach. We've reached out to the site for further comment; for now, read the official statement via the source link below.

Update: Facebook has responded to our inquiries and stated that while the bug was discovered earlier this month, "it had been live since last year." They immediately disabled the tool, fixed the bug and reenabled it within 24 hours of the bug's discovery. The bug was reported to them through a White Hat program for external security researchers.

Planned to turn on your PS3 for some The Last of Us action tonight? According to a thread on the PlayStation Support forums, if you're prompted to install the latest firmware update version 4.45 then you may want to hold off for the moment. A number of owners are reporting their systems will no longer fully boot up after the update, although the problem may only affect users with hard drives installed that are 500GBs or larger. According to the changelog, it was supposed to allow users to select whether or not they want an in-game notification when a trophy is earned. If it is tied to user-replaced hard drives, then it wouldn't be the first time -- v3.41 resulted in a few corrupted PlayStation 3 drives a few years ago. Check the thread for more details, if we hear anything from Sony then we'll let you know when it's safe to press OK.

Update: It appears the update has been pulled and users are no longer being prompted to download it, but we still haven't received any official response from Sony on the situation.

Update 2: According to the PlayStation Europe Twitter account, Sony is aware of the problem, and has taken 4.45 offline to investigate the issue.

Major Nelson takes Xbox One questions, says banned users will 'absolutely not' lose games

E3 is over, but Microsoft still has a long way to go to answer questions from gamers about its new Xbox One console, particularly when it comes to the effects of DRM. Director of Programming of Xbox Live Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson takes on the most upvoted ones from posters in Reddit's games section in this video interview with Chloe Dykstra. One question that seems to have a clear answer is whether banned users will lose access to any games they've activated, as he stated "Absolutely not, you will always have access to the games you purchased." That goes against a previous response from the Xbox Support twitter account, although that may have been the result of confusion between the Xbox One and Xbox 360 policies. A question with no satisfying response yet however, is what gamers can expect years down the road if Xbox One's authentication servers are shut down. Major Nelson followed up with a response in the comment thread that "I'll get the real answer, I just don't know it yet."

Interestingly, the question he wished more people would have asked is about the "family package" and, we assume game sharing with a single account, after previously bringing up its cloud library as one upside to the new DRM setup. Tracking back to the original debut's focus on the console's HDMI input and TV overlays he mentioned using snap mode to watch TV while gaming, or getting Xbox Live notifications and jumping "instantly" to a game while watching TV. A similar crowdsourced interview was planned with the PlayStation team, but cancelled. Major Nelson says he will address more questions leading up to launch and is planning an ask me anything session later, so keep your (many) inquiries at the ready.

Google first implemented face-unlock in ICS, and since then, it's been hard at work improving the feature and acquiring new IP related to it. Last fall, the search giant patented a way for multiple users to use face-unlock on a single device. This week it obtained a new patent for a method that requires users to make a series of facial expressions to gain access to a system. Essentially, the patent claims a method where a device captures two images of a user, then compares the differences in the images to identify a facial gesture and authenticate the user.

In other words, its a face-unlock method where a device looks at two pictures of your mug to tell if you're raising an eyebrow, frowning or sticking your tongue out as instructed by a prompt from the device. And, it double checks to ensure that it is, in fact, the same face in both images. Oh, and the patent leaves room for a series of expressions to be used -- so at some point in the future, you may have to give your Google-fied phone a wink and a smile before it grants you access. Guess that's easier than remembering a PIN, right?

DNP PayPal mistakenly informs users they've won 500 euros in a comedy of errors

Most of us who receive an email stating we're lucky winners of 500 units of cash money from PayPal might brush it off as a phishing scam. But what happens if the email looks legit? And what if PayPal was genuinely running a promotional campaign offering that amount to 10 random people each day, as long as they used the service that week? You'd be forgiven for believing it. That's exactly what happened to some PayPal users in Germany yesterday when they received an official email stating they've won 500 euros. So they rushed to their PayPal accounts only to find... nothing. You see, PayPal did actually send those emails, but it did so accidentally. PayPal Germany offered a mea culpa on its Facebook page, stating that it was "due to a technical error" and winners have not yet been chosen. Oops. Maybe PayPal should consider giving that money away anyway; it could stand to improve its image after all.

Facebook for Android update brings favorite apps tray to Home users

Now that Facebook Home is a practical reality, Facebook has to support both a full launcher and its traditional app at the same time -- and an update to Facebook for Android reflects that newly expanded focus. The big addition comes to Home, which gets its promised (and frankly needed) favorites tray for heavily used apps. Those relying on the traditional Android experience will mostly notice improved sharing: they can send multiple photos in one message, and it's easier for them to filter the visibility of shared content. No matter how committed you are to Facebook's vision of our mobile future, there's just one upgrade to grab at the source link.

Glass Nest lets users control their homes from their heads

Glass Nest apps lets us control our homes from our heads

Those who already own Google Glass are more likely than most to embrace new technologies like Nest's thermostat, so it only makes sense that an especially eager adopter would find a way to combine the two. That would be James Rundquist and his new Glass Nest app: Glass owners now just have to announce that they're coming home (or heading out) to make their Nest units change the climate. More exacting homeowners can fine-tune the temperature, too. While the utility is both unofficial and quite limited at this stage, Rundquist has posted source code that lets anyone expand on the project. If you're in the rare position of owning both gadgets, we'd suggest giving Glass Nest and its code at least a cursory look.

A formal celebration of Yahoo's acquisition of Tumblr wasn't what the internet outfit had up its sleeve for this evening's festivities. Instead, the company unveiled an update to Flickr at the NYC event with a host of new features that includes a retooled grid UI built out of images and up to 1TB of free storage for users. Yahoo is saying that the advertised storage space is enough room to stash 537,731 "full-resolution" photos per user. On the desktop side, Photostreams and Sets are cleaned up in proper grid fashion as well and a share button rests up top for easy sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, email and, of course, Tumblr. Single photos will now be displayed full screen -- the size options and white background have been nixed for the extra real estate.

The redesign is also coming to mobile devices on iOS and Android. In fact, the Android update should be available in the Play store as early as tonight. 10 Best Users to Follow on Vine

Vine-best-users Jessica-fee By Jessica Fee2013-05-13 19:15:03 UTC

Vine has quickly become one of the top iPhone apps of 2013, and is arguably the most popular social media network since Instagram, which launched in 2010. Most commonly, people use Vine to create six-second snapshots of everyday life, but the more innovative accounts have taken the tool one step further to produce high-quality mini-movies.

In no particular order, we've selected a handful of accounts that push Vine's creative capabilities to the next level.

Ames has a knack for creatively using props around the house. Some of his videos serve as fashion advice or lifestyle features, while others share #howto play with your food.

Khoa might be the current king of Vine. His vines feature clear, concise narratives and are often made entirely out of construction paper. His video feed features a few different patterns: his tagline "Have A Good Day" and profiles of his favorite Pixar movies, for example. Last week, he stopped by the Mashable office and created a custom-made vine.

A fashion photographer by trade, Cignoli's account features footage of high-fashion models, both behind the scenes and in the moment. Her videos have quite the artistic flare, and her use of bright colors is always delightful.

Pinot is a brilliant artist, and often uses his paper pad and pencil to bring two-dimensional drawings to life. His most popular series blurs the edges of reality with pencil and paper.

An extremely talented artist, Padgham is the video producer for Twitter. His videos shuffle drawings, paintings and a wooden mannequin.

Love's best vines feature paper characters dancing in the foreground of three-dimensional backdrops. He also gives stop-motion walking tours of beaches, forests and the occasional Japanese tea garden.

This vine feed gained popularity for its unexpected mashups of songs and video. Definitely turn on your sound for this account. (If your phone’s volume is turned up, but you can’t hear the vine, switch it off of vibrate.)

This account mainly features a tiny motorcycle making its way around our life-sized world. Highlights include a smoggy trip across a keyboard, a loop-dee-loop around duct tape and a brief trip to the hospital.

YellDesign has a good eye for bright colors and creative visual affects. The majority of the account focuses on food. The vine below was actually inspired by Pinot's blurred reality series.

McHone animates his videos with claymation and sculptures. Again, we recommend turning your sound on.

NVIDIA enables full virtualization for graphics: up to eight remote users per GRID GPU

NVIDIA GRID Unleashes Graphics for Virtualized Desktops

Full PC Graphics Experience Now Available to Entire Spectrum of Citrix Users

ANAHEIM, Calif.-Citrix Synergy-May 22, 2013-NVIDIA today announced that it is unleashing the full graphics potential of enterprise desktop virtualization with the availability of NVIDIA GRID™ vGPU™ integrated into Citrix XenDesktop 7.

NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology addresses a challenge that has grown in recent years with the rise of employees using their own notebooks and portable devices for work. These workers have increasingly relied on desktop virtualization technologies for anytime access to computing resources, but until now this was generally used for the more standard enterprise applications. Performance and compatibility constraints had made it difficult for applications such as building information management (BIM), product-lifecycle management (PLM) and video-photo editing.

Two decades ago hardware-based graphics replaced software emulation. Desktop virtualization solutions stood alone as the only modern computing form without dedicated graphics hardware. As a result, an already busy virtualized CPU limited performance and software emulation hampered application compatibility.

The situation began to improve a year ago with the introduction of the non-virtualized GPU in Citrix XenServer. But efficiency gains were limited because each user still required a dedicated GPU.

With the introduction of new HDX GPU sharing and deep compression techniques in XenDesktop 7, NVIDIA and Citrix customers can immediately take advantage of the hosted-shared form of desktop virtualization to deliver rich, graphics-intensive applications. Using the Microsoft Windows Server RDSH and XenDesktop 7 platform can enable the sharing of GPUs across multiple user sessions.

Furthermore, the combination of Citrix XenServer and NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology allows customers to efficiently share GPUs across multiple virtual machines. This allows businesses to address a broader set of users with their desktop virtualization infrastructure across a spectrum of verticals, including:

• Architects, engineers and contractors using computer-aided design (CAD) tools, like Autodesk BIM.
• Manufacturing businesses that want to automate the connection between product design and operations using PLM tools, like Enovia 3DLive, PTC Windchill PLM Connector and SIEMENS Teamcenter software.
• Digital-content creation workers using video and photo editing tools, like Adobe® Photoshop® software.
• Health-care specialists using picture archiving and communication system (PACS) applications, like GE Centricity EMR.

Citrix CEO and President Mark Templeton introduced XenDesktop 7 with NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology today in his opening keynote address at the Citrix Synergy 2013 user conference.

"With NVIDIA GRID vGPU, even the most intensive graphics applications can be delivered by XenDesktop 7," said Bob Schultz, vice president and general manager, Desktops and Applications Group at Citrix. "Now businesses can provide their users with the performance that they expect and need for engineering, design and video applications, while centrally securing and managing valuable intellectual property and sensitive information."

"For the first time, users of virtualized desktops have the performance, stability and compatibility of hardware-accelerated graphics, made possible by the GRID vGPU," said Jeff Brown, vice president and general manager of the GRID business unit at NVIDIA. "Millions of those involved in everything from product design to manufacturing to supply chain management can now enjoy the benefits of desktop and application virtualization with NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology."

Leading Citrix Resellers Endorse NVIDIA GRID
M7 Global Partners, a consortium of the top nine Citrix platinum-level IT providers in the U.S., announced its support for NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology. Collectively, the group reaches thousands of clients around the world. M7 customers looking to deploy visually rich applications in businesses of all sizes, healthcare settings and schools have expressed interest in the capabilities of the NVIDIA GRID vGPU.

"I've been selling desktop virtualization solutions for 18 years and the single greatest source of pain in that time has been customers who want to centralize the delivery of graphics-intensive applications," said Mike Strohl, CEO of Entisys Solutions, Inc., Agile360 and founding partner of M7 Global Partners. "The NVIDIA GRID vGPU is a game changer. At Entisys and across M7 we look forward to not only holding the spear, but to being at the tip of it as we bring to market this amazing technology, which our customers have truly been asking for."

NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology is being shown in NVIDIA's booth 303 and in the XenServer demonstration area at Citrix Synergy in Anaheim, Calif., through May 24. General availability is expected later this year. More information is available at NVIDIA GRID.

LinkedIn Bans Users From Promoting Prostitution, Escort Services

Linkedin-prostitution Seth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-14 01:00:53 UTC

LinkedIn is used by professionals of all types, but it looks like prostitutes and escorts will have to find another social network to promote themselves.

The social network updated its user agreement terms on Monday, adding an interesting clause, which caught the attention of one of our readers. Under a section entitled "Don't undertake the following," LinkedIn now includes this statement:

Upload, post, email, InMail, transmit or otherwise make available or initiate any content that: Even if it is legal where you are located, create profiles or provide content that promotes escort services or prostitution.

A LinkedIn rep confirmed to Mashable that the wording is new, but noted that the social network has always prohibited users from "unlawful" activities. The reason for the new wording, according to the rep, is that there are some countries in which LinkedIn operates, where prostitution is actually legal.

"In the old [user agreement], we had it covered by saying that one could not use a profile to promote anything 'unlawful,'" the rep said. "However, in some countries, that activity actually is lawful." With that in mind, LinkedIn decided to be a little more explicit about banning these professions from the site, regardless of what a country's laws might be.

Watch Hugh Jackman Answer Twitter Users' 'Wolverine' Questions

Wolverine-japanese-posterBahjournalist-5e1f0b4ff8 By Brian Anthony Hernandez2013-05-05 16:14:41 UTC

Golden Globe winner Hugh Jackman unleashed a series of YouTube videos this week in which he answered 11 Twitter users' questions about The Wolverine movie.

Fans submitted questions via Twitter using hashtags #AskHugh and #TheWolverine.

Jackman, who is playing the disgruntled hero with regenerative abilities for the sixth time in the X-Men film franchise, tweeted his answers and links to the videos on his @RealHughJackman account. You can watch all of them in this video gallery:

The film hits theaters July 26, and tackles Wolverine's immortality. "Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before," according to 20th Century Fox.

The Wolverine also features Silver Samurai and Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova). Its trailer shows a glimpse of Famke Janssen's departed Jean Grey character, who may reappear more than once in flashbacks.

Jackman's Twitter chat was just one part of 20th Century Fox's digital promotional blitz for The Wolverine. Aside from the traditional marketing tactics and video trailer, people involved with the film have leveraged Twitter, Vine, Facebook and YouTube to build anticipation for the summer release.

Director James Mangold, for example, shared a six-second Vine "tweaser," which teased a 20-second teaser for the movie's trailer.

Mangold is also tweeting exclusive images from the flick.

For its part, 20th Century Fox unleashed two beautiful "motion posters" on YouTube:

And on Facebook, people can create a Wolverine cover photo with their name on it:

ACLU: Carriers Leaving Android Users Susceptible to Malware

AndroidLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai2013-04-18 19:31:38 UTC

In a world where malware targeting Android phones is used more and more everyday, security updates are fundamental to keep users away from malware and hackers. That's why the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a complaint on Tuesday, accusing mobile carriers of failing to distribute updates and fixes to their Android phones.

In its 16-page complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission, the civil rights group pointed its finger at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, accusing the companies of leaving users vulnerable by providing them with phones running unpatched and outdated versions of the Android operating system, which "rarely receive software security updates."

"The problem isn’t that consumers aren’t installing updates, but rather, that updates simply aren’t available," wrote Chris Soghoian, the ACLU principal technologist and senior policy analyst, in a blog post. "Although Google’s engineers regularly fix software flaws in the Android operating system, these fixes aren’t packaged up and pushed to consumers by the wireless carriers and their handset manufacturer partners."

And that's because the majority of Android phones on the market don't run Google's native Android version but a carrier's customized version. The ACLU notes that these are effectively unique operating systems that need their own updates, and only the companies that modified the original Android source code can issue those updates. And most of the time, they either never do that or do it months later.

Moreover, according to the complaint, the carriers don't even warn the users about these flaws and vulnerabilities. And these failures, according to the ACLU, amount to "deceptive and unfair business practices."

If the carriers can't or are unwilling to issue security updates more frequently, the ACLU is asking the FTC to compel carriers to give their users a way to terminate their contracts early — without having to pay the usual termination fee — or allow them to exchange their insecure phones for newer ones, or to give them a full refund.

In February, the FTC ordered HTC America to patch security vulnerabilities in their phones. But in a tweet, Soghoian notes that with this complaint "we don't ask the FTC to force the carriers to issue updates, merely to tell consumers about flaws."

For Soghoian, putting pressure on the carriers to improve their security practices should be part of the government's commitment to improve the country's cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity threats are real, and improving security and privacy should be an important priority for the government," he wrote. "We think there are plenty of things the government can do to protect the computers and networks that consumers, businesses and government agencies depend upon without violating civil liberties. Investigating the wireless carriers and their role in smartphone security updates would be a great first step."

71% of Facebook Users Engage in 'Self-Censorship'

Facebook-sunglassesfor The Atlantic 2013-04-15 14:17:32 -0400

Most Americans now know the feeling of typing something into a social media input box, thinking again, and deciding against posting whatever it was. But while it certainly seemed like a widespread phenomenon, no one had actually quantified the extent of this "self-censorship."

But now, new research based on a sample of 3.9 million Facebook reveals precisely how widespread this activity is. Carnegie Mellon PhD student Sauvik Das and Facebook's Adam Kramer measured how many people typed more than five characters into Facebook content-input boxes, but then did not post them.

They term this "last-minute self-censorship." The research was posted to Das' website and will presented at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence's conference on Weblogs and Social Media in July.

The numbers are impressively large. Fully one-third of all Facebook posts were self-censored, according to the method Das and Kramer devised, though they warn they probably captured a substantial number of false positives. Seventy one percent of all the users surveyed engaged in some self-censorship either on new posts or in comments, and the median self-censorer did so multiple times.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the study was the demographic correlations with self-censorship. Men self-censored more often, particularly if they had large numbers of male friends. Interestingly, people with more diverse friend groups — measured by age, political affiliation, and gender — were less likely to self-censor.

While the researchers declined to speculate in this study about why people may or may not have self-censored, earlier research with a small group of users found five reasons people chose not share what they'd written: aversion to sparking an argument or other discussion, concern their post would offend or hurt someone, felt their post was boring or repetitive, decided the content undermined their desired self-presentation or were just unable to post due to a technological or other constraint.

For Facebook users, the main takeaway here is probably: Feel free not to share. Facebook, on the other hand, has to have a more complex relationship to this research. Their interaction and business models depend on sharing, but it's not hard to imagine some circumstances in which it would be better not to share: racist content, say.

Das and Kramer say future research should address when the non-sharing is "adaptive," (which I think means good, in this context) and when, in the words of Das and Kramer, "users and their audience could fail to achieve potential social value from not sharing certain content, and the [social-network service] loses value from the lack of content generation."
