Parrot Zik by Starck review: Is $400 worth it for the fanciest, techiest headphones around?

It's rare that How Would You Change takes a look at headphones, but we think this pair deserves the scrutiny. Parrot Zik by Starck is a $400 pair of Bluetooth cans with NFC, capacitive touch panels, active noise cancellation, head detection and a jawbone sensor for speech. Two of our reviewers put the headset through its paces and found that, sadly, a short battery life, wonky Bluetooth performance and so-so sound quality meant the set wasn't worth the $400 asking price. But what about you? Did you splash out the big bucks on these, and if so, how have you found 'em?

DNP ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A an Ultrabook with a topnotch display

To paraphrase the words of our reviewer, ASUS' Zenbook Prime UX31A is the third-best thin and light laptop you can buy. That's high praise indeed when the only two superior devices are the MacBook Air and Samsung's Series 9. So, why does it deserve such love? That's probably down to its sleek design, six-hour battery life and smooth performance. The only things it has in the "demerit" column is a wonky trackpad and weak audio, but we can forgive that, can't we? No, this is How Would You Change, which means we want to know exactly that: what, if you've owned one of these units, would you change about it?

Acer Aspire S5 review is an innovative Ultrabook design worth $1,400

If Acer's Aspire S5 were an episode of Friends, it'd be forever known as "The One with the Motorized Port Cover." Unfortunately, while it was cool to have a complex, Thunderbirds-esque mechanical loading sequence on the laptop, it did make using its USB ports a bit of a chore. Furthermore, lackluster build quality, a weak battery and some serious usability flaws means that it probably can't justify that sky-high price. That said, we figure plenty of you still went out and bought one, so tell us -- did your experience meet up to our review, and what, if Acer had asked, would you change?

What Would Happen If Rep. Trent Franks’s Abortion Ban Passed?

The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee approved Arizona representative Trent “Little Women” Franks's Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act today, a bill inspired by the Kermit Gosnell case that would ban abortions after twenty weeks, when some studies suggest a fetus can feel pain. The committee hearing yielded June’s first GOP rape gaffe, when Franks argued against Democrat-proposed exceptions for rape and incest. “The incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low,” the congressman said, echoing Todd Akin. He later clarified in a statement that he meant that late-term abortions of pregnancies resulting from rape are rare.

A similar bill recently failed in the House, but hypothetically speaking, what would be the effects of such legislation, which would limit women's Roe-protected right to an abortion until viability, or 24 weeks?

Conveniently, The New York Times Magazine has published a big story on just that. Today. It traces University of California San Francisco demographer Diana Green Foster’s long-term study of abortion, the first to compare the effects of having an abortion to the effects of being denied an abortion, a.k.a. the “turnaways,” most often because of gestational limits in state laws similar to the one Franks has proposed. It's not good: Turnaways had higher rates of hypertension and chronic pelvic pain and were three times more likely to end up below the federal poverty line two years later. Motherhood, Stephanie Coontz wrote in the New York Times this week, “is now a greater predictor of wage inequality than gender in the United States.”

Video: How Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim, Rachel Roy, and Other Fashion Greats Would Dress Hillary Clinton

Although Hillary Clinton didn't walk the red carpet at last night's CFDA Awards, she was still everyone's favorite guest. (Also, props to her for not exactly wearing a pantsuit but not quite wearing a dress either.) Before Oscar de la Renta issued his official plug for her 2016 presidential run, we asked the evening's biggest designers — including Zac Posen, Pamela Love, Alexis Bittar, and Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez — about what they'd like to dress her in. See their answers as well as more red-carpet stars like Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Wang, and Rooney Mara in our video.

Intel's Kirk Skaugen was relaxed about "me too" thin-and-light devices trailing behind Ultrabooks like Remoras. Perhaps it's because of our lukewarm reception of devices like HP's Envy Sleekbook 6z, which we found to be a little lumpen. While we liked its understated design, the sluggish AMD internals and flaky trackpad meant we weren't feeling particularly fondly on this piece of hardware. This is where you come in. Why not dream up a budget laptop that could hit the same price point but without the flaws -- the more imaginative, the better.

How Much Would It Cost to Be the Great Gatsby?

The-great-gatsby_06Chris-taylor-de1238cf88 By Chris Taylor2013-05-09 22:48:37 UTC

The highly anticipated movie from Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby, opens this weekend. Whether or not Luhrmann has done justice to Fitzgerald's quintessential Jazz age novel — or even bested the 1970s Robert Redford version — is open to debate.

What seems clear is that the filmmaker has remained true to one essential component of Gatsby's character — his sheer opulence. The mansion, the clothes, the decadent parties: much of it a desperate snare for Gatsby's doomed love, Daisy Buchanan.

SEE ALSO: The Great Gatsby in 133 Seconds

But how much would it all cost, in today's dollars, if you wanted to replicate the Gatsby lifestyle? Artist Nickolay Lamm, the same guy responsible for these disturbing climate change GIFs, decided to do the numbers.

The answer, according to Lamm's calculations: a cool $34.3 million. The vast majority of that would pay for a 40-acre mansion in the Hamptons, where real estate prices are most definitely not what they were in 1925.

As for the rest of it — well, Lamm's calculations seem a little conservative, if anything. We doubt how many opulent parties you'd be able to throw every other weekend on a budget of $250,000. That $4.3 million on top of your mansion would probably last you a year at most.

Check out Lamm's list below — and let us know in the comments what other hidden costs need to be added to the Gatsby lifestyle.

Proposal Would Require Internet Companies to Comply With Wiretaps

SurveillanceAlex Fitzpatrick2013-04-29 20:40:21 UTC

Government officials are working on legislation that would financially penalize email, social media, Internet phone and online chat companies that refuse to comply with court wiretap orders, according to a report.

The proposal would allow courts to levy fines "starting at tens of thousands of dollars" upon such uncooperative companies, according to the Washington Post citing "persons who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations." The fines would then increase on an exponential scale after three months of noncompliance.

Companies targeted by the proposal, such as Facebook and Google, would be tasked with developing their own procedures for handing over the requested data — perhaps email exchanges, chat records or IP addresses — to law enforcement.

Law enforcement has for nearly two decades used the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, or CALEA, to compel phone companies and Internet providers to allow them to snoop on customers' telephone and Internet traffic and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, or ECPA, to request access to users' stored emails and other electronic communications.

CALEA in particular, however, has become decreasingly useful to investigators as digital communications providers have been shifting from server-based to cloud storage and using end-to-end encryption on data transfers. And while data from Google, Twitter and other companies shows government requests for user data are steadily rising, not all government data requests are granted. Some companies have their own internal vetting process for deciding whether to comply with such requests and sometimes choose not to comply. Smaller companies say they lack the manpower to comply.

The proposal would amend CALEA only slightly, establishing that voice-over-IP companies are not exempt from wiretap requirements. Fines issued under the proposal would be levied through an amendment to the 1968 Wiretap Act.

The report of the proposal comes just a month after an FBI general counsel publicly argued the bureau should be able to wiretap email and online chat networks in order to conduct timely investigations in the digital era.

Privacy advocates, however, are already raising concerns over this reported wiretapping proposal. Joe Hall, Senior Staff Technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, argued that requiring companies to compromise their own encryption methods would make customers' data vulnerable to hackers.

"A wiretapping mandate is a vulnerability mandate," said Hall in an emailed statement. "The unintended consequences of this proposal are profound. At the very time when the nation is concerned about cybersecurty, the FBI proposal has the potential to make our communications less secure. Once you build a wiretap capability into products and services, the bad guys will find a way to use it."

Should social media companies be forced to allow law enforcement wiretapping? Share your thoughts in the comments.

How Much Would It Cost to Be Iron Man 3 in Real Life?

Ironman32Samantha Murphy2013-04-23 16:08:28 UTC

It would cost $10 billion to fund superhero Iron Man's lavish high-tech lifestyle in Iron Man 3 — about $9 billion more than past films.

Fictional billionaire Tony Stark is the CEO of his company Stark Enterprises, but in reality, what doesn't he do? He's a chemist, an inventor, an engineer and an entrepreneur. He may bring in the big bucks, but he's certainly a spender when it comes to being properly equipped to ward off bad guys.

In July, MoneySupermarket.com put together an infographic of what it would cost to be Iron Man, but as he embraces more new tech in the upcoming film Iron Man 3, the total cost has jumped from $1.6 billion to $10 billion.

The suits featured in Iron Man 3 total $7 billion alone — previously they totaled $1.4 billion. Among the new bells and whistles include a hyper velocity shot gun and updated armor.

Some existing technologies include rocket-propelled boots that make him fly ($3.8 million), helmet with projected holographic displays ($54 million) and the arc reactor nuclear power source built into the chest of his suit ($26 million).

Not to mention his $25 million mansion in Malibu and whole fleet of fancy sport cars.

For a full look at what it would cost to be Iron Man and a look at his new suits, check out the infographic below.

What Would the 'Mad Men' Office Look Like in the 21st Century?

Madmenthumb2013-04-06 00:00:26 UTC

Would Mad Men be such a hit without that classy 1960s charm? After all, what's the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency without a little sexism, smokes and mid-day drinks? (Boring, is what it is.)

But it is interesting to imagine Don Draper and co. in the Madison Avenue of 2013. Their lives would be far from the scandal and intrigue that surrounded them decades ago (we hope), but so would their tech.

Shutterstock took a dabble into upgrading the characters' personal belongings to reflect a more 21st century lifestyle. Their predictions had the characters swapping pens for cellphones and bad habits like smoking for modern day crazes like yoga.
