In case you forgot, Samsung and Apple's legal squabbles didn't end in US federal court last year: the litigation rages on in international courts. Stop us if you've heard this one -- Samsung and Apple are caught up in a lawsuit focusing in part on Cupertino's bounce back patent, and things aren't looking great for Sammy's lawyers. It's a familiar story, but this time it's playing out in a Japanese courtroom, with a Tokyo judge deciding that a number of Samsung devices are in violation of Apple's scrolling technology. What's this mean to the consumer? Nothing yet -- the court still hasn't calculated damages or approved an injunction, and this isn't the only legal battle the firms are waging in the country's court system. Feel free to brush up on your kanji and check out the source link below for more details, or skip on over to Bloomberg for a more digestible account.

Apple's newest AirPort Extreme base station gets dissected

The skyscraper? The hauteur router? The dapper WAP? All reasonable nicknames were considered, but in the end, Apple's sticking with "AirPort Extreme." The newest base station -- the one introduced alongside the company's Haswell-infused MacBook Air at WWDC -- takes on a new look and gains 802.11ac support, but that's not what you're here for. You're here for two reasons: first, you want to see this thing reverse engineered, and second, you want to get an idea of just how repairable it is. The gurus over at iFixit have done their usual teardown, offering up a plethora of lovely JPGs and settling on a respectable 8 out of 10 on the Repairability Index. Eager to learn more? Give that source link below a soft tap... with the key word being soft.

Apple's WWDC 2013 keynote livestream makes appearance on Apple TV

A new channel has just popped up on Apple TV for its WWDC 2013 Keynote, meaning that a livestream of the big event will be available for viewing there -- just like last time. The HD stream will kick off at 10AM Pacific time, and there's a chance you'll see it on Apple's Events page as well, if history repeats itself. You can also catch past extravaganzas at either spot (see the More Coverage link), and naturally, we'll have a full liveblog of our own -- so there's no chance you'll miss any of the fun.

Update: The WWDC 2013 Keynote livestream link has now arrived to Apple's Events page as well (at the source, below), though you'll need to be on Safari 4 with OS X 10.6 or Safari on iOS 4.2 at a minimum to watch it.

It's sure looking like we'll be getting ourselves a seventh version of iOS come Monday morning, but we'd guess Apple has some other surprises in store for the keynote that will kick off WWDC 2013. New laptops? Probably. An updated desktop operating system? Possibly. A television? Unlikely, but hey, anything can happen. We'll be there to help you find out, liveblogging the keynote from start to finish and bringing you all the news as it happens. We'll also be doing a live, streaming broadcast before the keynote to whet your appetite and get you up to speed on what to expect from the day's Apple news. After the event we'll be streaming live again, to give you a video rundown of all the news -- and maybe an early look at the day's new products. You can find the link to the liveblog and the time to click it right here:

China on Apple's Apology: 'Better Late Than Never'

Apple-china-thumbs-up2013-04-02 14:23:31 UTC

Apple CEO Tim Cook's apology to Chinese customers over the company's warranty policy has gotten a seal of approval from China's state-run media.

Two of China's largest newspapers, the Communist party-run People's Daily and its sister tabloid, the Global Times, both offered words of praise for Cook's statement that posted on Apple's Chinese website April 1. However, they also admonished Apple for not being as forthcoming in the first place.

"Tim Cook's apology to Chinese consumers is better late than never," a report in the People's Daily reads. "Although Apple fans were disappointed by the company's indifference before the CEO issued the apology, the belated letter finally demonstrates the crisis management skills that a first-class company needs."

The Global Times said Cook's statement had "eased the situation" and that, by changing its attitude quickly, Apple showed "professionalism and flexibility."

"Its reaction is worth respect compared with other American companies," the un-bylined piece reads.

Apple posted Cook's note after the company had been attacked over the past few weeks in the Chinese press over its warranty policy in China. Although Apple initially pointed out its warranties were the virtually the same worldwide, the attacks continued, insisting that Chinese customers were getting the short end of the stick.

The main issue was how Apple dealt with some broken iPhones, specifically the iPhone 4 and 4S. Reports from China said customers with broken phones were offered refurbished models but not outright replacements. Cook said in his statement that replacing a phone that's under warranty would be Apple's policy from now on in China.

China is Apple's fastest-growing market. After the Americas and Europe, it's the region that generated the most revenue for Apple, according to the company's most recent earnings report, at almost $7 billion. In the same period a year ago, total revenue from China was just over $4 billion.
