Parents who sued Apple over inapp purchases can now claim compensation

Apple's dedicated "in-app purchases litigation administrator" has had a busy few days. According to CNET, he or she has been emailing some important news to the 23 million parents who've been involved in a long-running class action lawsuit over in-app purchases racked up by their kids. The email says that individual claims for compensation can now be sent to Cupertino as per the terms of the original settlement back in February. Disputed transactions under $30 will qualify for a nominal $5 iTunes voucher, while bigger bills may be fully refunded in cash -- but only for strings of purchases made within 45 days of each other, back when there were no repeat password requests or disclaimers to get in a seven-year-old's way. There's a deadline of January 13th, 2014 for at least some types of claim, by which point Apple's litigation administrator may well find themselves diverted to another urgent case.

Take a look at these masterpieces that highlight some game-changing graphics interaction and even how you buy them. You'll find apps that create a full TV-like interactive channel, encourage parents and kids to build and share games, use augmented reality and are produced by animators with award-winning pedigrees, heralding a new generation of kids' apps.

They might cost you as much as a Starbucks latte, but they are much more satisfying. What are your kids' favorite apps?

Texting Your Parents About Drug Deals Is Terrible (and Hilarious)

Teens-textingSam Laird2013-04-25 16:27:04 -0400

Comedian Nathan Fielder made parents across the country Google "rehab" with a little game that he challenged his 39,000 Twitter followers to play.

The fun all started with this tweet encouraging followers to prank their parents:

Sure enough, the responses rolled in quick — and they are hysterical. Here are some of the best parental reactions, which range from enraged to sassy and sweet to totally clueless:

Special shout out to the mom who called her kid a "huge turd."

Android-Powered PC Lets Parents Monitor Kids' Online Activities

2013-03-29 22:07:21 UTC

When it comes to digitally-inclined children, a parent's biggest concern is safety. Kids' constant connection makes it difficult to keep track of how much time they're spending online or what content they're coming across — but one Kickstarter project is giving parents back the control.

MiiPC, a compact personal computing device, connects with most computer monitors or TV screens and lets parents track use from a mobile app. The device runs on Android's OS and each family member can utilize a separate desktop account. Check out the video, above, for more.

If your child is playing Angry Birds instead of researching a book report, you can keep them on course by specifying which apps and websites they can access. You can even log them out remotely or prevent future logins. Parents can also review a history of users' online use, and each account is personalized and can be controlled in real-time.

The idea is to provide a simple and effective way for families to take back control of online experiences, MiiPC's creators explain on the site. The PC reached its $50,000 funding goal in less than 24 hours and had raised nearly $100,000 at time of writing.

MiiPC is available for $99 with estimated shipping in August.

What do you think of MiiPC? Are there any devices or tools you use to monitor your kids online? Let us know in the comments.
