WNBA Player Puts on Astonishing Shooting Show

Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-11 18:27:10 -0600

Even LeBron James and Kobe Bryant probably can't match this. Watch a former women's college-basketball player sink 132 out of 135 three-pointers in just five minutes.

Her name is Laurie Koehn, and she played for Kansas State back in the early 2000s before going on to the WNBA's Atlanta Dream. In this clip, she's back at her alma mater, which uploaded the video to its official YouTube channel on Wednesday. Koehn's machine-like efficiency has proved a hit with sports fans online, earning the clip more than 330,000 views since.

Could Koehn outshoot most NBA stars? Check the video, above; then let us know what you think in the comments.

Virginia Tech Shooting Survivor Launches Campus Safety App

Virginia-tech-memorialjpgZoe Fox2013-04-20 16:29:44 UTC

Kristina Anderson was shot twice in the back and once in the foot on April 16, 2007, when a gunman massacred 11 members of her Virginia Tech French class. Thankful to have made a complete physical recovery since age 19, Anderson has since dedicated herself to starting a non-profit that promotes campus safety and speaking around the country about her experience.

"In the past year and a half, I've become more outspoken about what happened and the importance of campus safety," Anderson tells Mashable. "I didnt think more shootings would keep happening, but as they have I've become more involved."

Now she's helping launch an app she thinks has the power to make campuses, and eventually communities, safer. LiveSafe connects students and campus police in a two-way dialogue through a smartphone app. The hope is that this app will not only equip police to better respond to crime, but also to prevent it.

"LiveSafe is a two-way communication between campus police and students," Anderson says.

"Students are comfortable with smartphones; they use them to check in, order food and post pictures. We thought, we should also use our phones to make our communities safer."

"Students are comfortable with smartphones; they use them to check in, order food and post pictures. We thought, we should also use our phones to make our communities safer."

She and the LiveSafe team know that students hardly use the call feature on their smartphones, but they do text photos and videos. Therefore, students could be sending the police much more robust information. If a student gets robbed, you can ping the police using the app, sharing your exact location with a description of the crime — and you can remain anonymous when doing so.

With the app, the police can also communicate with students via push notifications, emails and voice, using either data or Wi-Fi connections. For Anderson, a notification from the campus police may have changed her fate six years ago. Neither she nor her classmates had any knowledge of the first shooting, which had occurred earlier in the morning at around 7:05 a.m., when the gunman entered their class at 9:30 a.m.

The shooter's first victim, Anderson explains, is a typical "test" shot. Many times a first attack will precede a much larger second one, so the shooter can gauge what he or she can get away with.

LiveSafe co-founder Shy Pahlevani, like Anderson, drew from personal experience when creating the app. Pahlevani was robbed and wanted to know why he couldn't immediately respond, so he and Samier Mansur built the app to empower people and communities in safety.

LiveSafe is currently beta testing on two campuses, North Carolina's Winthorp University and the University of New Hampshire. Winthorp has seen 6,500 downloads on its campus of just 6,000 students — the neighboring community has embraced the app, as well.

LiveSafe is currently only available for iOS, though an Android version is expected to roll out shortly. After receiving feedback from police chiefs, LiveSafe plans an open launch this summer.

iOgrapher Turns an iPad Mini Into a Video Shooting Powerhouse

Iographer12013-03-28 02:00:32 UTC

You might scoff at someone shooting video with an iPad, but what if it were an iPad mini, wearing this sleek double-handled iOgrapher mount? It accommodates different lenses, makes it easier to hold your iPad mini steady, and if that's not rock-solid enough, it lets you mount it on a tripod.

This Kickstarter project was created by high-school media arts teacher Dave Basulto of South Pasadena, Calif. He was looking for a low-cost way to give his students the ability to shoot and edit video, take stills and stream video live on the cheap.

Enter the iPad mini, the $319 tablet that can do all these things. Unlike the iPad, it's not so bulky that it would be unwieldy while shooting in the field, but its 7.9-inch screen is large enough to give a videographer a relatively enormous viewfinder with which to compose shots.

The iPad mini is a "good enough" production platform for many applications.

The iPad mini is a "good enough" production platform for many applications. Its rear-facing camera can take 5-megapixel photos and 1080p video recordings. It's not half bad at shooting video and taking pictures. It could serve students well as a shooting, editing and even a distribution device.

The problem: Basulto's students were coming back with shaky video when they shot with their iPads and iPad minis without the benefit of this mount/case. Sure, the iPad mini has video stabilization capability, but that wasn't enough to keep the video steady enough.

When Basulto designed the first iOgrapher Mini Mount, he had it fabricated on a 3D printer. He now has a working prototype, equipped with most of the features professional camera mounts employ. That includes three accessory shoes where you can attach lighting and audio gear, a properly positioned place to mount interchangeable lenses, and a standard tripod mount that you can even use for a portable dolly.

iOgrapher

The company told Mashable that if if the product meets its Kickstarter funding deadline, it plans to sell wide angle, telephoto and fisheye lenses that fit the iOgrapher, as well as lighting and sound accessories.

Ever the instructor. Basulto wants to teach you how to use iOgrapher, so he's creating a series of video tutorials to explain the finer points of using his versatile tool.

He tells us he's already created prototypes of this product in other sizes as well — to accommodate the standard iPad 2, the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S — but we're thinking none of those are as well-suited as the iPad mini for a field-shooting setup. It's right in the middle of the Goldilocks zone — not too big, and not too small.

Basulto's Kickstarter project has raised $2,665 so far out of its $15,000 goal, with 16 days left until the deadline. He hopes to release the product this June, which he enthusiastically says is "just in time for summer sports, movie-making, parties and everything else you want to capture and share!" He plans to sell the device for $49.

Here's a suggestion: Wait a few months for the rumored iPad mini with Retina display, which will give you a more accurate view of how well you've focused your shots.

Do you think the iOgrapher iPad mini mount will be a viable product? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Here's Basulto's video describing the iOgrapher:
