Apple OS X Mavericks 10.9 preview

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active review: a top-tier phone in a water-resistant package

After Samsung's latest product push in London, we have nothing short of a Galaxy S 4 franchise on our hands. The Galaxy S4 Active, a water-resistant phone with a comfortable, attractive design, is a strong option for outdoorsy -- and clumsy -- types. But this newfound durability comes at a price. Facebook announces Video on Instagram

With recent moves to add hashtag support, verified Pages, comments with inline photo embeds and more, it appears that Facebook is ready to take on competing social networks. It should come as no surprise to us, then, that it's putting its acquisition of Instagram to good use by introducing a service -- aptly called Video on Instagram --that rivals Vine, a similar service now owned by Twitter.

Google challenges FISA court on government data requests

Google and other companies have already made general calls for more transparency in the wake of the PRISM revelations, and it looks like Mountain View is now escalating those requests to a court challenge. As The Washington Post reports, Google is asking the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for some additional leeway with the government requests for data that it's able to disclose, and it's citing the First Amendment to make its case.

Apple releases statement on customer privacy

Following the likes of Microsoft and Facebook, Apple has publicly responded to the explosion of interest in the NSA's PRISM program, and has been authorized to reveal some of the data on what it's shared with the US government in the past. The company says it has "always placed a priority on protecting our customers' personal data," and its legal team evaluates each request.

GEAK Watch packs Android, WiFi and a plethora of sensors

Simply dubbed the GEAK Watch, this wearable device packs a surprising number of components, with the most notable one being the 802.11b/g/n WiFi module. All features considered, this smartwatch honestly sounds too good to be true, and it's only priced at just ¥1,999 or about $330.

Apple shows off completely redesigned iOS 7 at WWDC, coming this fall

We've read the rumors, we've seen the banners, and now it's finally here. Apple took the wraps off iOS 7 revealing a redesigned Game Center and Messages, as well as ten brand new much-anticipated features. Though the update is coming this fall, the beta version is now live for the taking download.

PlayStation 4 hands-on: DualShock 4 and games (video)

This week at E3, we got our first official hands-on with Sony's brand-new PlayStation 4. Though we had already put our mits on the new DualShock 4, we were finally able to play some next-gen games and interact with the Eye. All in all, the new controller feels great, responsive and comfortable. The PS4 Eye works efficiently and interestingly in tandem with the new controller, and the console loaded demos quickly and without pause.

MacBook Air review (13-inch, mid-2013)

We can't lie: we were hoping for a Retina MacBook Air last year when Apple rolled out the thinner, faster MacBook Pros with their pixel-packed displays and optical drive-free chassis. The Air, sadly, got left out of that particular party, but when we reviewed it we found a perfectly fine machine.

Huawei Ascend W1 review: the company's first WP8 device is promising, yet flawed

With a £130 off-contract price on O2 UK (or $230 at Walmart in the US) and a spec sheet that screams "2011," it's clear that Huawei's aiming this at the same audience as Nokia's lowest-priced Lumias, the 520 and 620. Though being a well-crafted device that'll impress anyone making their first tentative steps into the world of smartphones, when you consider the unit in a broader context, its flaws begin to show.

Engadget Expand is coming to New York City in November, and you're all invited

Earlier this year, about 2,000 of our closest friends in the San Francisco Bay Area came by and, together, we had ourselves a heck of a time. The first ever Expand was filled with a plethora of great gadgets, giveaways, electric cars, and speakers. Now, we're very happy to announce that Expand is coming to New York City on November 9th and 10th. And yes, of course you're invited.

Sony VAIO Duo 13 review: a much-improved take on the Windows 8 slider

When Sony's VAIO Duo 11 slider debuted late last year, its strong performance and crisp HD display weren't enough for us to overlook a flawed design and unimpressive battery life. The Duo 13, announced at Computex this past week, looks to be a formidable second attempt. With the VAIO Duo 13, Sony has completely revamped its slider design, and the result is a well-made machine with longer battery life and a more comfortable keyboard.

Apple WWDC 2013 liveblog!

Tomorrow's keynote at Apple's WWDC 2013 is sure to bring us a seventh version of iOS, but what else is anybody's guess. New laptops? Probably. An updated desktop operating system? Possibly. Whatever happens we'll be there liveblogging the whole thing, so be sure to bookmark the link above and return at 10:00am PT or your local time to get all your questions answered.

Washington Post: NSA, FBI tapping directly into servers of 9 leading internet companies

On the heels of this week's revelation that the NSA is bulk collecting call logs from Verizon Business customers, the Washington Post is reporting on another initiative code named PRISM. According to the report, it gives the FBI and NSA access to "audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs" from the central servers of Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL (parent company of Engadget), Skype, YouTube and Apple. Today, a mere three days after the initial report, defense contractor Edward Snowden has stepped forward admitting his responsibility regarding the leaks.

Hands-on with prototypes of the Xbox One and new Kinect sensor

We gasped our way through the liveblog. We brought you news of the specs and the software and all that other good stuff. And now it's time to take a deep dive into the Xbox One, Microsoft's next-gen console, and what it might mean for Earth's living rooms. Read on for our hands-on the Xbox One and new Kinect sensor.

Building Xbox One: An inside look at Microsoft's play for the next generation of gaming

The engineers in Microsoft's windowless next-gen Xbox silicon lab are rattled. And understandably so. We're in their office, after all, and we have a mess of cameras in the one place you're not allowed to have cameras. The skittish engineers aren't worried we'll film the mess of 24-inch LCD screens running video-compression tests, or the rows of desks with water hose stations used for temperature stress tests. It's really just a single chip that's causing concern: a custom-built Microsoft SoC that sits at the heart of the Xbox One.

ASUS Transformer Book review: meet ASUS' first detachable Ultrabook

The Transformer Book was an innovative concept when it was first announced a year ago. But now that it's finally shipping with old components, you're better off waiting for a possible Haswell refresh. Read on for our full impressions and review.

Samsung ATIV Book 7 review: a high-end Ultrabook arriving just before Haswell

If you've been waiting for Samsung to refresh last year's Series 9 Ultrabook, don't hold your breath; apart from a recent upgrade to 1080p resolution, it's basically stayed the same. The ATIV Book 7 is a good value among touchscreen Ultrabooks, with a reliable trackpad, fast SSD and lovely display. The main trade-offs are a shallow keyboard and a relatively heavy frame. Read on for our full review.
