Wayne Rooney Deletes Man U From Twitter Bio Amid Controversy

RooneyflickrSam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-09 23:58:49 UTC

There was a time, not so long ago, when pro sports stars who were disenchanted with their occupational situations had just a few choices. Among those options: suffer in silence, approach management behind closed doors and hope for the best, or wage an ugly public relations campaign for a change of scenery.

Twitter, however, has added some new and deliciously passive-aggressive possibilities to the mix.

Take English soccer star Wayne Rooney, for example. The striker has played for legendary club Manchester United since 2004, but late last month reportedly told management he wants out this summer. Management, in turn, has insisted it won't get rid of him.

Rooney hasn't commented on that, but recently did make a subtle — yet potentially significant — change to his Twitter bio. What used to read, in part, "Manchester United player" now simply looks like this:

Does Rooney know for a fact that he's played his last Man U match? Is this a simple act of dissent? Or is the move just a benign symptom of his exasperation with the club?

Either way, he's not the first high-profile athlete whose Twitter bio omission has been viewed as a public statement. Back in October, Lance Armstrong removed the line "7-time Tour de France winner" from his own Twitter profile as the International Cycling Union mounted its doping case against him and nullified much of his official legacy in the sport.

Stitcher just announced a new car mode for the iPhone version of its radio and podcasting app, bringing a simplified interface that works in both portrait and landscape positions. Accessible by tapping the Stitcher logo at the top of the screen, car mode offers a pared-down version of the app's standard UI, with bigger buttons and only the essential audio controls. It's nowhere near as flashy as Stitcher's BMW integration, mind you, but the point is to keep your eyes on the road and off your iPhone's screen. The app gets a few other updates this time around: a front page with top headlines, one-tap access to shows and podcasts you're searching for and improved playback when you're picking up in the middle of a show. Head to the source link below to give the app a spin, and drive safely!

YouTube Introduces Paid Channels

YtSeth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-09 19:24:03 UTC

After months of rumors, YouTube finally introduced a pilot program for paid channels on Thursday.

YouTube will now let a few dozen of popular channels charge viewers a subscription fee of 99 cents or more per month, the company announced in a blog post. Each of these channels will offer two weeks of free viewing before charges kick in and some will provide discounts for those who sign up for an annual subscription.

Some of the YouTube channels that are part of the pilot program include Big Think Mentor, Comedy.TV, PGA Digital Golf and Pets.TV.

"This is just the beginning," YouTube said in the blog post. "We’ll be rolling paid channels out more broadly in the coming weeks as a self-service feature for qualifying partners."

The move comes with relatively little risk for YouTube and the possibility of generating significant revenue by taking a cut of subscription fees and advertisements that air on the channels.

Would you pay to watch videos from your favorite YouTube channels? Share in the comments.

Yahoo rumors ahead of Monday's event include $11 billion Tumblr buy, Flickr updates

Earlier today, Yahoo sent press invites to a "product-related" event in New York City Monday afternoon and there are already two separate rumors about the company's plans. The first, from Bloomberg, concerns the event specifically and cites a "person familiar with the matter" reporting we'll hear about new updates for Yahoo's once-mighty Flickr photo service. The second is from AllThingsD which has upgraded rumors of a Tumblr purchase from possible to possibly imminent, saying the company's board will meet Sunday to decide whether it will make a $1.1 billion all-cash offer for the site. Since new CEO Marissa Mayer took over Yahoo has made a number of acquisitions with a focus on improving its homepage, content and app offerings including Flickr. That announcement is also penciled in for the 20th, but whatever actually goes down you can be sure we'll have the details as they're unveiled around 4PM ET.

Texas Congressman Will Arm Twitter Follower With an AR-15

Ar-15Tim Sampson for The Daily Dot 2013-05-09 12:28:50 -0700

Many members of congress use Twitter to stay in touch with their constituents. Some use it to arm them.

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), used his Twitter account Wednesday to announce an AR-15 giveaway. He invited all interested U.S. citizens to submit their names in hopes of winning the same kind of assault weapon that was used in the Sandy Hook massacre and has since become a symbol for those opposing new gun regulations.

The following tweets were posted about ten minutes apart from each other Wednesday evening and, as of Thursday morning, had drawn a combined 27 favorites and 131 retweets from followers.

Stockman's office did not immediately respond with a reason for why the congressman chose to host this giveaway and why specifically the AR-15 was selected as a prize. The contest website implores contestants to "enter to win the gun Obama doesn't want you to have." The contest rules state that all applicants must be at least 18 years of age and meet all relevant federal, state and local laws. The gun would be awarded through a licensed dealer, who would perform a background check.

The contest has already drawn plenty of criticism from the regular line-up of bloggers, who are quick to point out the conservative representative’s extreme Second Amendment views. This is the same congressman who recently released a bumper sticker that said, "If babies had guns, they wouldn't be aborted!"

Suffice to say, the giveaway has drawn a lot of vitriol from people on both sides of the gun control debate. Supporters see the contest, which has its drawing on July 4, as a stand against proponents of gun control and the Democratic party.

But many don't "<3" Stockman's actions. Reaction from gun control advocates ranged from impassioned to bemused.

Stockman isn't the first person to give away an AR-15 online, though. Such raffles have become common in recent months. One such contest on Facebook was shut down by administrators.

The AR-15 was the same weapon used by Adam Lanza, the young man currently charged with the murder of six adults and 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut last December. Despite this grim reputation, it's become a symbol around which anti-gun control advocates have rallied in recent months as lawmakers have proposed legislation that could potentially take the gun off the market. However, these and more modest restrictions have yet to pass through congress.

Tastiest Vines of All Time: Ryan Gosling Refusing Cereal

Ryan-goslingAnnie_s%20head By Annie Colbert2013-05-09 15:31:17 -0700

Ryan Gosling, if you don't eat your cereal, you'll get all skinny and look more Mickey Mouse Club than Notebook.

Film director Ryan McHenry is trying to get the dreamy actor to stuff his belly with wheaty nuggets of breakfast goodness, but the Gos is having no part of it.

In what is possibly the most creative use of Vine since the Harry Potter wannabe, McHenry matched scenes from Gosling movies with spoonfuls of cereal.

Eat it up, Internet.

The Last of Us

Even though we don't yet know what the PlayStation 4 looks like or how much it will cost, one of the many details revealed at Sony's February event was that games will be playable even as they download. Now it turns out we won't have to wait for the new hardware to experience that feature on a console -- Steam, for example, does this on PCs with some games -- as The Last of Us leaders Bruce Straley and Neil Druckman told Game Informer the PS3 game will be available as a download the same day it arrives on discs, and is playable once the transfer is 50 percent complete. There's no word whether other developers will have access to the "magic" Naughty Dog worked out with Sony to make it happen, but as least there will be as little delay as possible before you begin exploring its post-apocalyptic landscape June 14th.
