Planned to turn on your PS3 for some The Last of Us action tonight? According to a thread on the PlayStation Support forums, if you're prompted to install the latest firmware update version 4.45 then you may want to hold off for the moment. A number of owners are reporting their systems will no longer fully boot up after the update, although the problem may only affect users with hard drives installed that are 500GBs or larger. According to the changelog, it was supposed to allow users to select whether or not they want an in-game notification when a trophy is earned. If it is tied to user-replaced hard drives, then it wouldn't be the first time -- v3.41 resulted in a few corrupted PlayStation 3 drives a few years ago. Check the thread for more details, if we hear anything from Sony then we'll let you know when it's safe to press OK.

Update: It appears the update has been pulled and users are no longer being prompted to download it, but we still haven't received any official response from Sony on the situation.

Update 2: According to the PlayStation Europe Twitter account, Sony is aware of the problem, and has taken 4.45 offline to investigate the issue.

Bug report hints that a mature build of OS X 109 may be ready for WWDC

From the initial preview to its final release, Mountain Lion took a journey that lasted over five months and saw 269 builds of the update before finally going gold in July of 2012. In fact, it was more than a month after its big WWDC keynote that Apple finally got OS X 10.8 out the door. But, things may be a little different this time around. Bug reports are starting to pop up in Cupertino's Radar system with the operating system build number 13A451. The first half, "13A," strongly suggests platform in question is OS X 10.9, since Mountain Lion was 12A, Lion was 11A, and so on, and so forth. The second half implies that this is the 451st build of the (not so) mysterious OS known only at 13A. That means that there have already been almost twice as many internal releases of 10.9 (presumably Cougar or Cloud Leopard... or maybe Scottish Fold?) as there were of 10.8 at the time of its release. This could indicate that Apple is preparing a substantial overhaul of its desktop OS, or it could just be that the company wants to ensure it avoids the usual flood of issues that accompany upgrades to the operating system. Either way, with WWDC right around the corner we're sure the mystery will be solved soon enough.

IDC report Samsung sold more phones than Nokia in its Finnish homeland during Q1 2013

Nokia might have been bested by Samsung's global phone shipments for a while, but there was always one vanguard -- the Finnish public, who have patriotically stood by (and bought up) Nokia smartphones over the last few difficult years. It looks like rivals have very much broken through, however, with IDC reporting that Samsung was responsible for the highest number of phone sales in the last quarter, claiming 36 percent against Nokia's 33 percent market share. Third place was Apple, trailing with 14 percent, while other manufacturers soaked up the remaining 16 percent. According to Digitoday, the change was due to the continuing shift to smartphones, one that shows no signs of slowing down.

Report Yahoo becomes the latest company to place a bid on Hulu

The rumors on the potential sale of Hulu started circulating again a couple of months back. Now, according to AllThingsD, Yahoo is joining other big-name companies (such as Time Warner Cable and DirecTV) in the race to try and acquire the streaming service. Per the always-insightful sources "familiar with the process," Marissa Mayer & Co. submitted a bid for Hulu just this morning, though there are no details on how much the company is willing to spend on the video site. Something tells us we'll know more soon enough, but we can say with confidence that Yahoo is starting its holiday shopping really early.

Report Xbox One has remote play between consoles so a friend can help

Unnamed sources speaking with Polygon say the Xbox One has a remote play feature between consoles, both hardwired and online, allowing friends to take over gameplay remotely. The demonstration the sources claim to have witnessed featured one Xbox One connecting to another using "a local hardwired connection between consoles," with a Skype call bridging the two users. A similar feature is available on Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 4, both between consoles and via PlayStation Vita.

The other piece of the report adds to a bit we already knew concerning the new Kinect. "At some point, we'll be able to have conversational understanding," Microsoft hardware lead Todd Holmdahl told us last week. That "some point" may be sooner than later, as Microsoft reps were apparently already demonstrating the functionality, and said it'll be available either at launch or "post-launch within the first few months."

Report: Amazon Working on 3D-Capable Smartphone

AmazonSeth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-09 18:24:40 UTC

For more than a year, there have been rumors that Amazon is working on a smartphone. Now, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon is actually working on two.

The Journal reported Thursday that Amazon is "developing a wide-ranging line-up of gadgets," including two smartphones, one of which will have a 3D screen. Citing multiple anonymous sources, the Journal says the 3D-capable smartphone will not require special glasses and may even let users navigate just by moving their eyes.

In addition to the two smartphone models, Amazon is also said to be working on a device for streaming music and a set-top box, the latter of which was also reported by Bloomberg BusinessWeek last month.

Amazon did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Until now, Amazon's hardware efforts have centered around its Kindle e-readers and tablets. However, CEO Jeff Bezos suggested in an interview with AllThingsD in September that Amazon was planning to expand on its hardware offerings in the coming year. "We will certainly — not any time soon — but next year. We have some more things that we hope people will enjoy," he told the publication. "It’s premature for me to talk about them."

While it's not particularly surprising to hear about Amazon working on a smartphone, it is a bit strange to hear news of a possible 3D-enabled device. Despite a fair amount of hype a couple years ago, 3D-technology has had mixed success at best in the consumer technology market.

Amazon's stock was up by about 1.5% on the day as of publication.

YouTube Launching Paid Subscriptions to Some Video Channels: Report

Youtube-logoAnita-li-53bfb9a9b2 By Anita Li2013-05-06 02:25:19 UTC

YouTube is set to launch a paid subscription model for its specialist video channels as early as this week, according to a report.

The move, which has been in development for months, aims to help channels finance a wider range of content such as television shows and films, and will serve as another source of revenue, according to the Financial Times.

The service will include up to 50 YouTube channels, and subscriptions to each channel will start as low a $1.99 per month, the newspaper reported Sunday, citing anonymous sources.

In response to the report, a YouTube spokesperson told Mashable, "We have nothing to announce at this time, but we're looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer."

Rumors that YouTube will monetize its premium content have circulated for some time. In January, AdAge reported that the site asked a small group of channels to apply to be among those paid.

At the time, a YouTube representative told Mashable, "We have long maintained that different content requires different types of payment models ... The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we’re looking at that."

Other signs suggest that YouTube is likely working on à la carte and pay-per-view options for its video channels. Code found in a February app update mentioned subscribing and unsubscribing from paid YouTube channels.

Amazon Stock Flat After Strong Earnings Report

Istock_000021743070large1Lauren Indvik2013-04-25 20:42:28 UTC

After missing analysts' expectations for three consecutive quarters, Amazon beat the Street's forecast, reporting earnings of $0.18 per share compared to earnings of $0.28 per share last year. Wall Street analysts were expecting earnings of $0.10 per share.

Despite the good news, Amazon's stock was up only 1% to approximately $277 per share in after-hours trading.

The report shows that sales continued to grow at a slightly slower clip in Q1, up 22% year-over-year to $16.07 billion. Growth for the last four quarters has averaged 28%. Operating cash flow increased 39% to $4.25 billion. Free cash flow declined 85% to $177 million, which Amazon attributes to its $1.4 billion investment in property and corporate office space at its headquarters in Seattle.

Amazon said its net sales and operating income were negatively impacted by changes in foreign exchange rates, to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.

The company expects to have a slower second quarter, with net sales in the range of $15.35 billion, up 17.5% from Q2 2012, and a total operating income loss of about $165 million.

Twitter Is Working on Two-Factor Authentication, Report Says

PadlockAnita Li2013-04-24 06:12:59 UTC

Twitter is currently testing two-factor authentication, and plans to roll it out to users soon, according to a report.

The microblogging network is conducting internal tests before gradually debuting the security measure site-wide, Wired reported Tuesday night.

Also known as "two-step verification," two-factor authentication prevents fraud by forcing users to provide two pieces of information that will verify their identity. Bank customers, for example, must provide both a physical card and PIN number.

The reports come just after The Associated Press' Twitter account (using the handle @AP) was hacked earlier Tuesday. A tweet sent from the account falsely alleged that there were two explosions in the White House, and that U.S. President Barack Obama had been injured. Hackers called the Syrian Electronic Army took credit for the incident.

Calls for Twitter to enforce two-factor authentication were swift and strong, with many commentators — including Mashable's Lance Ulanoff — saying the security measure is necessary to prevent further hacking incidents.

Back in February, Twitter posted a software engineering job related to product security. It listed designing and developing user-facing security features "such as multifactor authentication and fraudulent login detection" as part of the position's opportunities.

For its part, Google also has an option to apply two-factor authentication. When signing in, users must enter their username and password — but in addition, Google will send them a security code via text, voice call or mobile app, which they then must enter when prompted.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Report: Top 500 YouTube Brands Average 884,000 Monthly Views

YoutubeTodd Wasserman2013-04-23 15:55:56 UTC

The top 500 brands on YouTube generate 442 million views per month, averaging 884,000 each, according to a report.

Outrigger Media's analysis, which used its Open Slate analytics platform, also shows that brands are averaging lower subscriber counts on YouTube — 35,000 — compared to an average 200,000 Twitter followers.

These are the top 10 most-viewed YouTube brand channels:
1. Google Chrome 25,063,920
2. Pepsi 23,194,380
3. Google 21,186,750
4. Red Bull 16,312,320
5. KiaBUZZ 14,097,840
6. Google Play 9,161,970
7. Dior 8,982,450
8. Google Chrome UK 8,616,870
9. GoPro Camera 8,542,890
10. Google Nexus 8,113,050

Among other data points from the report:
-There are a total of 18.8 million subscribers among the top 500 brands.
-The total number of videos produced among the brands is 315,000.
-Videos average 98,000 views.
-Just 7.4% of videos from the top brands are repurposed TV commercials.

The researcher also found that certain categories get more subscribers than others. In particular, tech is a popular category and travel is not:

Using its own formula that took into account engagement, influence and size of audience, Outrigger pronounced Red Bull as the top brand on YouTube. Here's Outrigger's top 10, replete with each brand's "Slate Score":

Report: Tablets to Outship Desktops This Year

Apple-foxconn-2013-03-26 14:11:10 UTC

Tablet PCs will outship desktop PCs for the first time this year, catapulting us into a true "post-PC era," according to a report by researcher IDC.

Shipments of tablet PCs will surpass desktops as the former category grows by 48.7% and the latter shrinks by 4.3%, IDC estimates. In 2014, tablets will also outship portable PCs. "In emerging markets, consumer spending typically starts with mobile phones and, in many cases, moves to tablets before PCs," said Megha Saini, research analyst for IDC's Worldwide Smart Connected Device Tracker, in a statement. "The pressure on the PC market is significantly increasing and we can see longer replacement cycles coming into effect very soon and that, too, will put downward pressure on PC sales."

Meanwhile, "smart connected devices," a category that includes smarthphones, tablets and PCs, grew 29.1% vs. 2012 to more than 1 billion devices. The value of those shipments, according to IDC was $576.9 billion. The researcher predicts that by 2017 the segment will hit 2.2 billion units with revenues of $814.3 billion.

Looking at the fourth quarter, IDC also found that Apple had 20.3% of the smart connected devices market vs. 21.2% for Samsung. Apple had 30.7% of revenues for the segment compared to 20.4% for Samsung, according to IDC.
