DNP Nokia's Here Maps comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

The touchscreen Asha 501 Nokia unveiled back in May will now work with Here Maps, the company announced on its blog today. The navigation service is already available on Windows Phone 8, Firefox OS, Android and iOS, and its arrival on the Asha platform will boost that operating system's more modest selection of apps. Available now as a beta release, Here Maps for the Asha 501 offers turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic information. It's designed specifically for low-end smartphones without GPS on board, and Nokia's post notes that the current version "is a starting point and we will improve the experience over time." Upcoming changes will likely include improved satellite images, which the company says will soon be updated to a higher quality. Asha 501 users in select countries can nab the Here Maps beta via the source link below.

Sony announced its FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player a few months ago, and today confirmed it's arriving in homes and on store shelves by July 15th. The $699 box only works with Sony's own 4K TVs, and early adopting owners of "qualifying" X900A sets can expect a $200 introductory discount. Also available is in-home setup and activations free of charge, set up through the 4KActivation.com site once it's available July 8th. Sony's also named the online 4K movie distribution network it's launching this fall -- Video Unlimited 4K -- which will offer films, TV episodes and short-form content for download. For feature films, it will cost $7.99 for a 24-hour rental or $29.99 to purchase. The 4K Player (and its 10 pack-in movies) is available for pre-order now on the US Sony store, expect it to hit other retailers soon.

Alicia Silverstone Launched a Breast Milk Share Service

On her blog, A Kind Life, the avid vegan and mother of Bear Blu posted last week about her latest endeavor: Kind Mama Milk Share, a breast milk sharing program inspired by a conversation she had with one of her friends, who struggled to produce enough milk for her own child. Silverstone explains, "She tried reaching out in her community for donor milk, but it was almost impossible to figure out what kind of lifestyle choices the donors had made. And after all that hard work keeping herself vibrant and healthy, she felt she had a right to demand better for her baby." The actress continued her call to nursing moms out on the Internet: "I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives. It's why I'm starting the Kind Mama Milk Share, a way for moms to connect with other moms in their area ... Think of all the babies we can help raise together!" The endeavor's since picked up some speed in Silverstone's comments section, and though the concept of sharing baby milk remains controversial, it will hopefully assist a few worried parents and infants in need. But don't taint the supply! They're looking for Kind Mamas, or more specifically, "beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health" (aka vegans only).

Snapjoy photo sharing service shut down following Dropbox aquisition

Snapjoy has announced that it'll be shuttering all of its services a mere six months after being acquired by cloud colossus Dropbox. In a blog post, the company said photos can no longer be imported into Snapjoy and the iPhone app is henceforth unavailable. If you've got images stored on the site, you'll have exactly a month to get them downloaded, since after July 24th, "all photos and data will be permanently deleted." The same thing happened to Audiogalaxy shortly after its acquisition by Dropbox, and of course other big fish like Google and Twitter are well known for similar behavior after eating smaller fish -- though at least we saw the #Music fruits of Twitter's buyout shortly after it happened. On the other hand, we've yet to see Dropbox do anything with Audiogalaxy, so we hope the defunct apps will be resurrected in some form soon.

Sony's own PlayStation 3 just happens to be the most used Netflix-streaming device in the word, but that doesn't mean the outfit isn't offering a diverse array of streaming options. Today at its E3 press event, the company announced that the all three of its consoles -- PS3, PS4 and Vita -- will support a Sony live viewer service, Redbox Instant and Flixter, as well. Sony didn't say when support for these services would arrive, but made sure to mention that its own Music and Video Unlimited apps would be available on the PlayStation 4 at launch. Amazon announces new 'Login with Amazon' service for apps, games and websites (video)

Amazon Announces Login with Amazon to Reduce Sign-In Friction and Drive Higher Customer Engagement

Developers and website owners can securely connect with Amazon's over 200 million active customers

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 29, 2013-- (NASDAQ: AMZN) -- Today, Amazon launched Login with Amazon, a new service that will enable the over 200 million active Amazon customers to securely and simply login to apps, games, and websites. Login with Amazon allows developers to easily reduce sign-in friction for their customers, leading to higher engagement and order conversion.

According to a 2012 Harris Interactive study, over half of all American Internet users have five or more unique passwords to remember. Login with Amazon reduces sign-in friction by eliminating the need for users to create an account and password, and instead allows them to sign-in using their existing Amazon account information. Amazon customers can choose to share certain attributes of their account profile with apps, games, and websites by using Login with Amazon.

"Login with Amazon enables app developers and website owners to leverage Amazon's trusted sign-in solution, allowing them to focus on providing a great experience for their customers," said Michael Carr, Amazon Vice President, eCommerce Services. "Amazon customers now have a hassle-free way to quickly and securely sign-in to apps, games and websites, without having to remember yet another password."

As early adopters of Login with Amazon, Zappos and Woot, both Amazon subsidiaries, saw significant customer adoption. Zappos saw 40 percent of its new customers choose to sign-in to Zappos.com with an Amazon account. Woot found that new customers picked Login with Amazon two times more often than any other social login on their site, and those customers had the highest rate of order conversion.

Login with Amazon is available at no charge to developers of apps, games, and websites. The service is easy to integrate, as developers can typically go from registration to launch in a matter of hours. It is based on the OAuth 2.0 authorization framework, allowing developers to leverage a widely-adopted open protocol. For additional details about Login with Amazon, including code samples and the SDKs for Android and iOS, please visit login.amazon.com.

Login with Amazon is the latest offering in an array of services that make Amazon the most complete end-to-end ecosystem for developers building, monetizing and marketing their apps and games. These capabilities include:

The ability for app developers to use Amazon Web Services' (AWS) technology platform for their infrastructure needs. Building blocks such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon DynamoDB allow developers to focus on what differentiates their app rather than the undifferentiated heavy lifting of infrastructure.
GameCircle, which includes capabilities like Achievements, Leaderboards, Friends and Whispersync for syncing games across devices, and leads to better engagement with games.
In-App Purchasing on Kindle Fire, Mac, PC and web-based games. This enables developers to offer items in their apps and games while allowing their end users to simply use their Amazon accounts to make the purchase.
A/B Testing, which helps developers improve app functionality with the ability to simultaneously test two different in-app experiences to determine which is more successful prior to launching to a broad audience.
Game Connect, which lets developers list their virtual goods for sale on Amazon, increasing discoverability of their games and making the purchase of virtual goods as easy and convenient as possible for customers, leading to increased monetization for developers.
Amazon AppStore submission for distribution to nearly 200 countries globally enables developers to reach millions of Amazon customers worldwide.

Puppycam Features Future Service Dogs for Disabled Veterans

Puppy-cam-future-service-dogsKsd2 By Kate Sommers-Dawes2013-05-11 21:58:11 -0300

On the night of May 5, a golden retriever named Gucci gave birth, live and online via puppycam, to a healthy litter of adorable puppies, each one with an important task ahead. The eight pups, who are visible via live stream (below) courtesy of Explore.org, will grow up to assist wounded veterans and others with disabilities as service dogs.

East Coast Assistance Dogs (ECAD), which has a program for wounded veterans, Project HEAL, trains dogs "to retrieve items, open doors, activate light switches, pull wheelchairs, balance, brace, and perform many other highly specialized tasks."

As future service dogs, these tiny puppies will eventually spend two weeks training with their new companion, who may be a returning veteran, learning to help him or her with mental and physical disabilities such as traumatic brain injury or blindness. Housing during training, as well as the service dog, are provided to returning soldiers free of charge by ECAD.

Former army captain Luis Montalvan sustained injuries to his brain and spine while serving in Iraq, and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. In the video below he says the service dog ECAD provided, named Tuesday, has helped "to keep me in the moment, rather than looking backward."

Explore.org, a division of the Annenberg Foundation, has brought Gucci and her litter of future service dogs to the world on the puppycam as part of its "Pearls of the Planet" initiative. The program aims to bring nature to viewers virtually and in real time, "to help people fall in love with the world around them."

“At explore we are archivists,” says founder Charles Annenberg Weingarten, via the organization's website. “We strive to create films that allow the viewer to join us on our journey as we go on location and experience what unfolds.”

You can see the future service dogs and their mom in action on the live puppycam. The more adventurous can see archived video of their live birth (which, we warn you, is a little messy) here.

HTC Asia CEO Lennard Hoornik is the latest reported exec departure

Turbulent times at HTC, it seems. Earlier today, we reported a pair of high-profile exits from the company -- one rumored and one confirmed -- and now we're looking at another. According to CNET, the CEO of HTC Asia Lennard Hoornik has also abandoned his post, with regional CFO Chia-Lin Chang taking the reins until a formal replacement is named. Hoornik, who joined HTC from Sony Ericsson, allegedly left the Taiwanese handset maker after a two-month period of absence. Did he jump, or was he pushed? And, are these exec departures linked in any way or mere coincidence? We've reached out to HTC for confirmation and comment, so let's hope there's someone still working there to answer us.

Update: We have received the following confirmation from HTC:

"HTC can confirm that Lennard Hoornik has left HTC to pursue other interests. We appreciate his contributions to our South Asia efforts over the past year and wish him all the best. HTC's CFO, Chialin Chang will provide interim leadership in this strategic region while we work to find a permanent solution."

Update 2: According to a source of ours, Head of Global Digital Service Elizabeth Griffin will also be leaving HTC later this week to join Nintendo.

CHICAGO and NEW YORK, May 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Seamless North America LLC and GrubHub Inc. today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to merge two of the nation's premier services for ordering takeout. The merger will create a combined company well positioned to drive more orders to restaurants, deliver a better experience for hungry diners and enhance services to corporate clients.

The combined organization will enable diners and companies in more than 500 cities across the U.S. to order from more than 20,000 local takeout restaurants. In 2012, the online and mobile platforms of the two organizations sent approximately $875 million in gross food sales to local takeout restaurants, resulting in combined revenue well in excess of $100 million.

"We are excited to combine the strengths of these two dynamic organizations in an industry that is rapidly gaining traction. We believe the merger will enhance the products we are able to offer both our diners and restaurants," said Matt Maloney, GrubHub co-founder and CEO. By combining our complementary restaurant and diner networks, we are well positioned for continued growth in a massive market."

"By bringing together some of the industry's most celebrated products, including Seamless's award-winning iPad app and GrubHub's innovative Track Your Grub, we will be able to drive more value to all company stakeholders," said Jonathan Zabusky, CEO of Seamless. "Both companies also share a strong commitment to provide world-class service to restaurants, diners and corporate clients. This merger is an opportunity to glean the best from each platform and improve upon what we bring to all of our partners."

Key strategic benefits of the merger include:
Broader network and product offerings. The expansive network and diversified products and services of the combined organization will strengthen the company's ability to serve restaurants and diners across the U.S. and U.K. Accelerated innovation. The anticipated pooling of the combined organization's research and technology will help to streamline product development and better address the evolving needs of this dynamic industry.

Enhanced financial flexibility and strength. The merger will allow the company to pursue growth opportunities while continuing to invest in its current business.

Matt Maloney will serve as chief executive officer of the new organization, and Jonathan Zabusky will serve as president. GrubHub and Seamless shareholders will both have significant representation on the combined company's Board of Directors. Brian McAndrews, an independent director on the Seamless board prior to this transaction, will serve as chairman of the new, combined board. The merger is subject to regulatory approval.

The combined company's management team is expected to draw upon the experienced group of leaders from both companies. As well, the combined organization's name and marketing brands are expected to be determined following regulatory approval.

BitTorrent Takes Its File-Syncing Service Public

Bittorrent-syncing-linksPete Pachal2013-04-23 15:01:00 UTC

Like the idea of syncing files but don't trust the cloud? You're a prime candidate for BitTorrent Sync, the peer-to-peer service's app that copies and syncs files between computers. Introduced in January, the app comes out of private beta with new features today.

BitTorrent Sync is an app that runs on Windows, OS X or Linux machines. Once you've installed it on two or more devices, just designate which folders you want to sync, then secure them with a "secret," (i.e. a code key). Type the secret into the other machine(s), and you're done — any files in that folder are copied over through BitTorrent's notoriously efficient P2P network.

File syncing is very fast; once I installed the app, a 529-megabyte file was copied in about four minutes. If the machines doing the syncing are all on the same network, the process is even zippier.

With the service going public today, BitTorrent is adding the ability to do one-way syncing. That way, if you don't want recipients to modify the files you're sharing, changes will only go in a single direction. Users can also now generate one-time secrets that expire after 24 hours as well as designate files within a synced folder to exclude.

BitTorrent Sync currently has no mobile app, and it obviously negates the access-anywhere nature of cloud services, there are a few reasons it might be attractive for certain situations. First, the files are stored locally, so they are inherently more private and secure. That also means there's no limit (or additional cost) for storage. Finally, as noted, syncing is extremely fast thanks to the nature of BitTorrent's peer-to-peer system.

Are you interested in BitTorrent Sync? What will you use it for? Let us know in the comments.

Bandwidth Issues Down Boston Cell Service, Not Police

Boston-marathon-cell-phones1Christina Warren2013-04-15 22:15:39 UTC

Cellphone service in the Boston area is currently experiencing disruptions, following the explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Much of the service disruption seems to be due to increased usage. A Sprint representative described the situation to the Boston Globe, saying that "the network is blocking calls because the number of calls coming in exceeds the capacity.”

Verizon released a statement saying:

"Verizon Wireless has been enhancing network voice capacity to enable additional calling in the Copley Square area of Boston. Customers are advised to use text or email to free up voice capacity for public safety officials at the scene. There was no damage to the Verizon Wireless network, which is seeing elevated calling and data usage throughout the region since the explosions occurred."

AT&T tweeted:

Earlier reports also indicated that cellphone service in the immediate area may have been shut down by the police. This followed information from CNN anchor Chris Cuomo and others who reported authorities believe that the explosive devices were remotely detonated, possibly by a cellular phone.

Cellphones are frequently used to detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Middle East. The trigger for a radio-controlled IED is controlled by a radio link and devices such as cellphones can be used to initiate the firing circuit.

To prevent further destruction, some countries take preventative measures to shut down or limit cellphone service in specific areas. In November, Reuters reported that Pakistan suspended cellular phone coverage in many parts of the country after a series of bomb attacks were triggered by mobile phones.

The Associated Press originally reported that service was deliberately interrupted in order to prevent the ignition of more explosives, but has since reversed its claim.

Mashable has been unable to confirm any deliberate cell phone jamming by the Boston Police or other authorities. Moreover, according to Chris Soghoian, a principal technologist and senior policy analyst for the ACLU, even if police did jam cellphone signals, that wouldn't necessarily stop an explosive from going off.

“If you jam the network, then it means that whoever is controlling the device doesn't get to choose when it goes off anymore," he said. "What you're doing is taking away their control; that might not necessarily mean that the device will stop working completely.”

We'll continue updating this story as it develops.

Audi and T-Mobile Team Up for $15/Month In-Car Wireless Data Service

Audi-t-mobile-car2013-04-05 16:02:45 UTC

There's a little secret about connecting to the Internet from your car: You usually must use your smartphone to do so, running up potentially shocking data charges along the way. T-Mobile and Audi want to make that cheaper for you with its new in-car data plan by offering wireless connectivity for $15 per month.

Audi Connect services are already sophisticated, creating a Wi-Fi network inside the vehicle that can be accessed by up to eight devices at the same time. Launched in 2011, it was the first of its kind, letting drivers access special versions of Google Voice Local Search, "My Audi Destination," which works with Google Earth to display up to 50 destinations on the car's screen. That gives you a look at your surroundings from Google Street View, a welcome sight to a lost and weary traveler.

This new plan requires the Audi owner to plunk down $450, which sounds like a fortune, but that includes 30 months of wireless data service.

This new plan requires the Audi owner to plunk down $450, which sounds like a fortune, but that includes 30 months of wireless data service. That's 15 bucks a month. Not bad. Or, you can choose a $30 per month-to-month plan that doesn't require a service contract. There are a few pricing increments between those two, as well.

Audi currently offers a six-month free trial of wireless data service when you buy the car, so if you don't mind paying that $450 up front, it ends up being a better deal than exceeding the limits of your smartphone's data plan as your in-car link to the Internet.

Another advantage of not using your smartphone for in-car connectivity is that you can either conserve battery power, or avoid having to plug your phone in every time you want to use it as a communications link in your car. For everyday use, that small inconvenience can quickly become an annoyance.

After testing a variety of cars with cellphone connectivity, I can vouch for the fact that running apps from your phone to be displayed in your car — especially GPS — runs a battery down with disconcerting rapidity. And there's no need to distract yourself fumbling with a smartphone at 70 mph either.

I think this kind of pricing for this new partnership between T-Mobile and Audi will become commonplace in the near future, and is destined to go even lower. Readers, do you think this $15/month deal is worth it? Let us know in the comments.
