DMP Limbo leaps into iOS, terrifies users with its elegant simplicity

Starting today, Limbo, the 2D side-scrolling game that both charmed and terrified us on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, is available for iOS devices. Dino Patti, the CEO of indie developer Playdead, tweeted the announcement about the game's launch with a link to the iTunes store, and from early reviews, the iOS port doesn't disappoint. Limbo tells the story of a young boy searching for his sister in an eerie monochromatic landscape; the game's restrained visuals and minimalistic sound effects are guaranteed to haunt you long after you stop playing. Both new gamers and fans who've come to love Limbo on their consoles can get their scares on the go -- for the price of $4.99 -- by heading over to the source link below.

DNP Nokia's Here Maps comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

The touchscreen Asha 501 Nokia unveiled back in May will now work with Here Maps, the company announced on its blog today. The navigation service is already available on Windows Phone 8, Firefox OS, Android and iOS, and its arrival on the Asha platform will boost that operating system's more modest selection of apps. Available now as a beta release, Here Maps for the Asha 501 offers turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic information. It's designed specifically for low-end smartphones without GPS on board, and Nokia's post notes that the current version "is a starting point and we will improve the experience over time." Upcoming changes will likely include improved satellite images, which the company says will soon be updated to a higher quality. Asha 501 users in select countries can nab the Here Maps beta via the source link below.

DNP White Nexus 4 no longer available on Google Play

If you've been putting off buying a white Nexus 4, be ready to wallow in regret: you've missed your chance to get one straight from Google Play. Both the 8GB and 16GB versions are "no longer available for sale," a little more than a month after the company's online store started carrying them. A Google spokesperson told us that the alabaster phone has indeed sold out, and that the Play Store won't carry it again, as it was a limited edition release. All's not lost, though -- T-Mobile still sells the white Nexus 4, but you'll pay a slight premium for it.

Android 43 spotted on Samsung Galaxy S 4, available to test now

A new version of Android (4.3, and still called Jelly Bean) is already doing the testing rounds on Samsung's Galaxy S 4 and thanks to some porting work from SAMMobile, it's apparently working on both the Google Play and original iterations. We've caught a glance of Android 4.3 on LG's Nexus 4 already, but we're now getting a second look at a refreshed camera interface, some minor design tweaks (like more regular appearances of a share button) and, well, we're still perusing the gallery for more nuggets. If you know what you're doing (and don't fear voiding your warranty) you can find the files at the source -- early reports suggest that the GS4 is "fully working" on this early build. We'll update this post if we find anything else new, but early impressions suggest it's a relatively gentle upgrade from the existing mobile OS.

Havok -- the physics middleware engine used by almost every big console and PC game -- announced its start-to-finish mobile game development suite will be available at no cost to developers. Project Anarchy has tools for everything: visuals, physics, artificial intelligence and animation. We say "no cost" instead of free for a reason: Havok expects a few things out of its users in return. It wants to co-market some finished games and for clients to become part of its development community. Currently, that dev community includes folks programming for iOS, Android and Tizen. Microsofties may not be left out, however, as Havok has "flexible business models" for Windows Phone if you ping its sales team. Full details in the links below.

EDIT Google Groups adds new collaborative tools

Ever get the impression that organizing an event is like herding feral kittens? If so, then you might want to check out Google Groups. If you're unfamiliar with the service, Groups are basically bulletin boards that you can participate in via email, with the ability to set boards either public or private. Up until this point, some of Groups' best features have been limited to to users of Google Apps for Business, but that all changes today. Now everyone can create a group inbox and email address to collaborate on items -- which really beats wading through a gaggle of forwarded emails. You can also assign tasks to other members of the group, manage email and mark items as resolved. No time for dealing with the same questions over and over? Hit 'em back with a canned response -- don't worry, your secret's safe with us.

AOL Reader beta officially available for your RSSperusing needs handson

Wondering how AOL's RSS client will rank as a Google Reader replacement? Today's the day we find out, as the doors to the AOL Reader beta have officially swung open. Feedly's been absorbing Google's castaways for weeks now, and Digg's is only two days away from launching its own freemium RSS client -- but we couldn't resist getting an early taste of what our parent company (Disclaimer alert!) is cooking. Join us after the break for all the details about this latest entrant in the field of feed readers.

AOL Reader hands-on See all photos 11 Photos

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

If you're a fan of AOL's Alto email client, you'll be pleased to know that AOL Reader shares the same basic design language. That may seem minor, but UI consistency between services is a major plus, especially since many of the newcomers don't have a core branding to hang their RSS hats from. The web app's layout is pretty simple, with categories, tags and sources on the left, and headlines on the right. When you first fire up AOL Reader on the desktop, that right-most pane is populated with the 10 most active feeds in your collection. Of course, you can always switch from the standard list view to a more Now-like card view or a three-panel display that puts actual article text in a right-hand pane while continuing to display headlines in the middle. Unfortunately, even in three-panel mode, AOL's reader makes pretty poor used of your screen real estate. There's loads of unnecessary padding all over the place and there's no getting rid of the giant, empty gray column on the right. To make matters worse, UI elements shift around as you change layouts, which leaves you hunting for the view button after you've decided the three-panel layout is too cramped.

Sitting atop all this is a straightforward navigation bar, packed with a web search widget and links to AOL Mail, On and Homepage. The most important feature, however, is the ability to quickly import your Google Reader subscriptions with just two clicks... provided you've already exported you data from Reader, unzipped the archive and located your subscriptions.xml file. Even then you'll have to hope that AOL Reader is actually willing to import your feeds. A number of people on the Engadget staff have yet to successfully get the fledgling service to recognize their XML files. At the moment, even adding individual feeds manually occasionally caused the web app to hang. We'll cut it some slack since we're still looking at a beta release, and chalk up some of the issues up to being overwhelmed with traffic, but the inability to actually subscribe to anything might permanently turn off some visitors, even if the problems are only temporary.

AOL Reader beta officially available for your RSSperusing needs handson

While dedicated apps aren't available yet, the AOL Reader site does come in a mobile-friendly flavor. (AOL tells us that dedicated apps are coming soon, likewise with further integration of third-party services.) The web app works fairly well, propagating across the Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices with nary a rendering glitch in sight. It doesn't hurt that the phone interface borrows heavily from the current crop of native apps out there, with a menu that pops out of the left side and a minimal header populated with only the most basic controls. There's even a fancy floating tool bar in the article view that lets you quickly jump one post back or ahead, and star something for later.

While the interface might seem barren at times, all the most essential features are present. There's a pretty basic feed discovery tool that lets you browse topics or search by keyword and a host of Google Reader-esque keyboard shortcuts, which should have most of you RSS addicts dancing for joy. You can also make your own basic tweaks, like displaying an unread count next to a source, hiding empty feeds and changing the font size. If you're not a fan of the blocky blue and gray default theme, you can change it under settings to a lighter, still-blocky white and gray option. You can also star articles in case you want to read them later.

While we appreciate its clean and simple design, we did encounter some performance issues. More often than not navigating the interface was swift, but it did hang up occasionally, especially when trying to load heavily populated feeds (say, 100 stories or more). Honestly, we think that Feedly has a slight advantage in the speed department, which is somewhat troublesome considering it has loads of features missing from Reader and a much more robust UI.

AOL's (seemingly opportunistic) RSS reader clearly isn't quite ready for prime time and, as it stands, doesn't bring much to the table in the way of unique features. Though, the development team notes that having resources from content creators is something that they're confident will set it apart from the pack. After a few hours of getting familiar with AOL reader, we're not quite enthused enough to switch over from Feedly (and, honestly, we'd much rather Google Reader be granted a stay of execution), but AOL Reader shows some promise. Of all the services vying for title of King of the RSS Hill, AOL's is one of the most unabashed in its aping of Google's soon to be shuttered platform -- and that's not a bad thing. The folks at Mountain View struck pretty much all the right notes when creating Reader, now AOL is simply trying picking up the pieces. That is, if its servers can handle the load.

Sean Buckley, Mat Smith and Terrence O'Brien contributed to this report.

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

It's been almost half a year since Vertu launched its first-ever Android phone, the TI, and now the company's decided to throw in a couple of limited editions to lure the big spenders. As pictured above, the new Vertu TI Colours collection is wrapped in either "Sunset Red" or "Midnight Blue" calf leather, and only 1,000 units are made for each color. As per typical Vertu style, there's a unique number etched on the back to indicate which of the 1,000 units yours is.

The rest of this hand-crafted, matt grey titanium phone remains unchanged otherwise, namely its 3.7-inch tough sapphire screen, Android 4.0, 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 64GB storage plus an 8-megapixel camera. And of course, the phone still comes with the famed Vertu Concierge, a "100 percent independent" service that CEO Perry Oosting is very proud of. To join this exclusive club, you'll have to somehow fork out a whopping HK$90,000 or €8,900 (about US$11,700) -- just a tad more expensive than the TI Titanium Pure Black edition, but also more flamboyant. This author already spotted these new phones at Vertu's Hong Kong Airport store, and he's currently accepting donations.

Smartisan OS now available in prealpha status, international Galaxy S III only

You may recall that a Chinese startup dubbed Smartisan promised to offer its first custom Android ROM on June 15th. Well, the time has come and the company stuck to its word, but there's a catch: the software is currently still in pre-alpha status, so it's neither stable nor speedy -- definitely not recommended for daily use just yet. That said, the release apparently includes most of the features demonstrated at the three-hour-long launch event.

The other catch is that you'll need an international Samsung Galaxy S III (i9300, WCDMA) plus Windows (presumably non-RT) to flash this early version of Smartisan OS. If you're game then head to the source link for the download and the instructions (but in Chinese). If not, you can wait for the upcoming release for the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S II, Xiaomi Phone 2 and Samsung Galaxy Note II. Or you can just wait for Smartisan's very own phone due next year, if you don't mind testing your patience.

PS4 now available for preorder on Amazon at $399

Microsoft may have been the E3 matinée, but Sony's late-night showing was quite impressive -- offering a gaming device that's $100 less, with plenty of other notable features to help it stand out of the next-gen crowd. And if you were waiting around until after the PlayStation press conference tonight before deciding which console to grab, it's finally time to settle on your top choice (if you plan to go with only one, that is). Now that the PS4 has been priced at $399 and a general timeframe of availability has been set for this holiday season, it's now time to head to online retailers to pre-order a unit of your very own. So far we've seen the page pop up on Amazon, though we imagine it will only be a matter of time before several other retailers follow suit. If you know without a doubt that this is the next-gen gaming console for you, you know what to do below.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 now available for $149 with Smart Previews and more

Adobe teased us with a Photoshop Lightroom 5 beta at the start of the spring, and it's closing out the season by releasing the finished goods. Mac- and Windows-based shutterbugs can download the completed image management app today, either at no extra charge through a Creative Cloud subscription or $149 for a stand-alone version ($79 for an upgrade). Buyers get the same core updates no matter how much they spend, including an Advanced Healing Brush for removing objects and Smart Previews that let travelers leave their original files at home. When Lightroom is free to try for a month, it likely won't hurt to grab a copy at the source link -- especially if your photo collection is growing out of hand.

HGST's 1.5TB laptop drive is the densest hard disk available

HGST Launches The Highest Capacity Hard Drive For The Mainstream Mobile Market

With the Highest Storage Density of Any Hard Drive Today, HGST Delivers 1.5TB Capacity in a Standard 2.5-inch 9.5mm Form Factor, Targeting Notebooks, External Hard Drives, Gaming Consoles and All-in-one Desktop PCs

HGST (formerly Hitachi GST and now a Western Digital company) provides a wide range of products that includes hard disk drives, enterprise-class solid state drives, and innovative external storage solutions and services that store, preserve and manage ...

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital company, NASDAQ: WDC) continues to push technology innovation by offering the highest storage density (MB/mm3) of any hard disk drive (HDD) today. The new Travelstar® 5K1500 is the industry's first 9.5mm, 1.5TB mobile hard drive and features the industry's highest capacity in a standard 9.5mm design. Built on HGST's proven platform for quality and reliability, the Travelstar 5K1500 delivers high shock protection, low power and solid performance to meet the growing demands for a variety of market segments, including notebooks, external hard drives, gaming consoles and all-in-one desktop PCs.

The HGST three-platter Travelstar 5K1500 offers 50 percent more capacity than currently shipping 1TB 2.5-inch 9.5mm HDDs and 200 percent more capacity than single-disk 500GB 7mm or 5mm 2.5-inch HDDs, making them ideal for capacity-hungry devices. With better PCMark® Vantage and PCMark 7 performance than currently shipping two-platter HGST 5,400RPM models, all Travelstar 5K1500 drives ship with a 32MB cache buffer and 6Gbps SATA interface.

Smaller than current 15mm or 12.5mm 2.5-inch HDDs, the Travelstar 5K1500 drive features a standard 9.5mm form factor for simple integration into many traditional system designs. This allows OEMs and system integrators to take advantage of its huge capacity, 0.5 watt low power idle and 5,400RPM performance to deliver new high-capacity, power-efficient systems for longer battery life in notebooks and other unplugged applications. With only 2.5 bels idle, the 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 drive is also whisper quiet. The new Travelstar 5K1500 family offers the best operating shock at 400G/2ms and non-operating shock at 1000G/1ms to protect against bumps and rough handling in mobile environments. A dual stage actuator is included for track miss registration improvements for greater data integrity and reliability. All Travelstar drives use halogen-free components to support the "green" computing initiatives that are of increasing importance to today's end users.

"Contrary to popular belief, the mobile hard drive market is not being replaced by SSDs. We continue to invest in and serve both the traditional 9.5mm and 7mm thin and light HDD mobile markets as they offer the best cost-per-GB, performance and proven product reliability for high-capacity, mainstream, Ultrabook® and A/V content creation notebook markets," said Brendan Collins , vice president of product marketing at HGST. "HGST continues to have a strong share in the 2.5-inch market and the new Travelstar 5K1500 hard drive is the latest addition to our broad line of 5,400 and 7,200 RPM 2.5-inch drives, giving OEMs, ODMs and integrators an opportunity to grow and differentiate their product lines."

"The PC continues to be an important productivity platform for content creators, who represent an echelon of users that value high-capacity portable storage," said John Rydning , research vice president for hard disk drives at IDC. "HGST's new mobile 1.5TB hard disk drive in a standard form factor for notebook PCs provides the highest capacity solution available today for users seeking more storage capacity inside their notebook PC."

The new 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 is also available in an Enhanced Availability (EA) model, which brings together a host of features such as high capacity, durability and low power for blade servers, network routers, video surveillance and other systems needing 24x7 access to data. The Travelstar 5K1500 drive helps system designers, integrators and IT managers build and maintain their storage systems, achieving greater storage density in the same 2.5-inch footprint, while maximizing performance, and improving data integrity in "always-on" applications in lower-transaction environments.

Availability
Travelstar 5K1500 drives are expected to ship in June. The EA model, and the optional self-encrypting Travelstar 5K1500 model, which is designed to meet the Trusted Computer Group (TCG) Opal Storage Security specification, are expected to be available in 3Q 2013.
